San Diego wheelin Valley of the Moon

Was a fun day trip, got some rain sleet and snow. Not enough to ruin our fun though. I really love the scenery in valley of the moon. Next time I'll give more notice.

This is where we BBQ'd some food before wheeling valley of the moon. This is up on a 2 mile lookout point right on the US/Mex boarder; This is where we do the shooting.

If that's the same area I'm thinking of, it's pretty cool camping out there too. You used to be able to shoot out there too. They put an end to that about 7 years ago. If you go to the back of the valley and veer to the right does it take you up to the mines? We used to camp at about the end of the road. We didn't do too much wheeling but theres some great hiking with all the rock formations and such. Let me know the next time you're going out shooting.

yes if you go to the end and go right you go to the mines. Ill let you know next time. There are a bunch of cool camping spots up there. The shooting spot is on the west side of the valley of the moon. It's still legal down there.

I wouldn't camp out there unless I had a firearm with me. Last time I was up there we heard voices and as soon as we looked where it was coming from, the mexicans clammed up. Just because you don't SEE something out there doesn't mean there isn't, ya know?

I hear ya Ryan, I'm always packin heavily out there, thats part of the fun. I've slept out there a few times. I can't tell you how many boarder jumpers I've seen out there. Doesn't bother mel. They're just looking for a free meal and a warm place to stay for a night on yours and mines dime until the BP sends em back home.

Wow, that's pretty sketchy. I wouldn't be caught out there without a gun. I would imagine the jumpers would be more than inclined to rob campers.

That was really strange hearing those voices that day. The 3 of us listened for a long time trying to figure out where they were coming from.

No kidding. What better vehicle to steal than a truck that can smoke the BP offroad :saw:

When I used to camp out there regularly there would be three or four of us with .45's visibly strapped to our sides. Don't remember ever seeing any illegals. Go figure.

That's the way! :bigclap:

I've been camping in the valley for years and its easily one of the best spots in San Diego. The roads are not too bad except for the one that leads up to the mine. There are some pretty sweet caves you can sleep in, if you can find them, and some great rock climbing with existing routes. They even used to throw concerts out there using the rocks as a natural amphitheater. It would be nuts to 4x out there and find 100+ people gathered around. I met some kid that drove his moms minivan out there, it was a blast watching him try to drive out. As for guns, I wouldn't advise camping anywhere without one! But I dont Think you have to worry about the illegals. When you go into the valley there is about 50 years worth of shells out there, when they stumble across that area they probably think everyone in America is packing heat. The only problem I've ever had out there was the Border Patrol, They like to sneak up on your camp when you least expect it. Just doing thier job, but it can kill your buzz.:drunk:
