Roadtrip to Texas

Well Im just going to start this now.

Im taking a roadtrip From Temecula, Ca to San Antonio, Texas

I have the 6/30th - 7/14th off of work.
My sister is due to have her child, well 2 days ago :roll:

Main game plan.

6/30, Sleep until 3 pm, Yes 3 in the afternoon.
Wake up just in time to shower and then I'm going to an Eric Clapton concert in LA.
As soon as I get home (prolly around midnight) take off. All the way down I10 straight to Tejas.

While im there im surely going to see old friends, old girl friends, and party it up with my old krew.

So, Your wondering why this is here.

Basically im using this as a blog sort of, But where you guys can comment and I can post pictures.

Ill probably be absent from the forum most of that time except long enough to post pics here.

So until wednesday this coming week, disregard this thread.

Oh and to prepare for the trip this is what I did friday the 19th of june.

Fuel filter, Air filter, PVC valve and grommet, plugs; Tcase, Trans, And front diff fluids, Rear was done 4k ago with the rear locker install so im not worried about it.

You may be wondering why im up at 1:15 am, its because im staying up a bit, to sleep in later, so that I can leave tomorrow night after the EC concert.

Do dash cam updates every hour and then post the vids when you get a chance.

Its all just part of being in the Pics Or It Didnt Happen Crew.

I have watched dash-cam road documentaries. They are great. I really enjoy them. Its great to follow along.

I'm wondering how yours is going to start out.

A. Sober coming back from slow hand and hitting the road.
B. Delayed getting on the road until after 2pm the next day due to having way to much fun at slow hand.

jackwolf, can you list links to your fav dashcam documentaries? I'm doing something similar (short trips to Oregon special places) and would like to see the best examples. Here's my rig (in a 2010 Prius) I swap out to the FJ for off-road video:

Ill deff do what I can, My skills at narating and whatnot suck though.

Oh and im not even old enough to buy my own drink, The EC concert is going to be a blast but its not my first time seeing him so I think ill be fine ;)

scoobie not sure I'd take off right after a Clapton concert [or any show for that matter] there will probably be a lot second hand "haze" floating around... you don't want to get popped with a contact high on... probably better to start fresh the next day...

If that is a radar detector on the dash then that is also a great spot for the camera. I like to see the person not just hear their voice. I like to see them start off chipper and then fade slowly. The ones you don't see are the ones from people who could not pull through and could not bear posting it.

I'm not saying I take pleasure in other peoples misfortune, I am saying that, there was no producer to artificially inject drama into it, people can tell. I've traveled, the same things have happened to me. I like to see them happen to other people just to see how they deal with it. I think it helps define their character and it helps me reflect on my own.

Anyway

The way you have the camera rigged in your photo is a style I do not care for unless it is a camera strapped to a motorcycle doing a time trial on some twisty back road or a car doing a time trial at Nuremberg ring in Germany.

But if you must. I would at least install a black cloth on the dash. See how the radar unit is reflected on the window? I find it distracting. Also, a polarized lens on the camera is not going to cut it since they spin for a reason. As soon as you dial in the lens, once the vehicle changes direction on the compass rose, it is going to need adjustment again. Your set up is good for cross country trips that are time compressed from days to seconds. I like those.

I also like videos that go full circle.

Perhaps a Danish couple are in front of their home, bags packed curbside. They are waiting for the shuttle that will take them to the airport. Cut to the airport; where they hook up with another couple.

We follow them along to New York and they buy a car and drive it across the USA and then they sell it in California before they fly to Hawaii. Then back to Seattle where they rent a small RV and buy bicycles at Wal Mart and the video shows them taking the bikes out of the cartons in the parking lot and stuffing the bikes into the RV.

Then another video of them inside the rv with one of them saying to the camera, hey look we finally got the bikes in the rv and the camera is pointed to the ceiling where the bikes are somehow strapped to the ceiling and they all laugh at some inside joke.

They spend some time in the state and national parks and we get to see all the antics along the way; fake rubber scorpions, shoes tied to the end of fishing lines. That sort of thing. Then maybe they go down to Mexico and so on.

It ends with them back home, bags curbside after having just been dropped off. Maybe it finishes with one of them saying," Hey look it didn't burn down." And they point the camera at the house and laugh at some inside joke."

So I say make it personal and keep it human. People love that. I know I do.

Just say whatever comes to mind. Unscripted is always the best way to do it. That is one of the things that keeps people watching, the candor of human emotion.

At the very least you can twitter-video some of it. I think you should look into that.

I drank and smoked for years before I was legal. 15.5 was the only magic number in my early years, I got my driver permit and at 16, I got my driver license. 18 for smokes and 21 for booze were no epic events.

I used that CruiseCam and Canon HV30 for taping an autocross last weekend. The detector was for the ride home from the track.

Agreed, it's unsuited to the type of story you described. Maybe a couple of lipstick cams to a DVR with Firewire out to a smartphone. Not a cheap setup, but if advertising supported and enough clicks may at least pay for the trip.
