Old Chinaman’s Gulch - August 30, 2008

Many thanks to Steve of Rising Sun with his FJ-62 for leading us on Chinaman’s this past weekend. We powered through the loop in about two hours including lunch thanks to Steve’s impressive pace and skill. We only encountered a lone cyclist and one buggy the entire run. The anticipation I had for Whale Rock was met with an equal challenge as pictures don’t describe the “pucker” a driver feels. A quick preview of Carnage by foot provided a few laughs as to the capability of our vehicles and our willingness to destroy them. We passed.

Afterwards Steve showed us up the way via dirt while winding along the Arkansas to Leadville and little Mexican bar and grill. Watching the clouds roll off Mount Massive and Elbert at sunset was quite the backdrop for combo plates, beverages and conversation.

Enjoy

http://www.grillbarcafe.com/ will get you all to some good beer and food when wandering that way. No worries Ike, I'm sure I'll be wheeling CO again next chance I get. It's hard to stay away from those big mountains.

Hey Jake, if I had known about this I would have come over and done it with you. It's just over Cottonwood Pass from where I'm at. I've been in Crested Butte since the 1st of July (heading back to Dallas the end of September). You could have stopped in and done some of the runs over here as well, since I've been here by myself since the middle of August. Maybe next time.

Some of these pics need to be in the calendar thread if you have full res backups of them.

That FJ62 with the roof top tent is very nice as well as yours Vermejo.

Dang Jim, I had forgot that you were lived in CB during the summer. We stayed in Gunnison 2 nights traveling through CB that Friday to do Devil’s Punchbowl and explore. We would have been more than happy to have you show us around.

Thanks, Corey. I’ll try and post up some this year’s pics.

Steve’s Cruiser was one of the best I’ve seen.
