Holcomb Creek, Big Bear Day Run 02/07

Smiling Jim and I made a quick run up to Big Bear Saturday morning. Very fun run, both our first time on Holcomb, and well worth the drive. Weather was nice and there were still some patches of snow lying around throughout the trail. Trail has two nice rock gardens one at the beginning of the trail and one at the end which was wet and slick. The trail also has quite a few tight switchbacks some of which were off camber, edging close to a nice fall off a legde. Some of which were also quite tippy. We also ran into a couple of FJ40's and Jeeps. Followed them through the 1st rock garden and left them when they took lunch. The green FJ ripped apart his rear drive shaft playing on some rocks which forced them to take lunch. Not a lot of pictures cause Jim and I flew through the trail. Very good run Jim we'll have to get out again, at least we know the new shackles work...

you still IFS? Seeing that rock garden and seeing you go through that gives me hope :D

Toyopnoy 02-11-2007 06:58 AM

Sliders and a rear locker go a long ways...haha. So does picking the right lines, lol.

chimmike 02-11-2007 07:13 AM

werd. Good man! (sliders will be here evntually but I'm doin a front locker first).

Nice running :D Way to represent Yotas!

slosurfer 02-11-2007 07:13 AM

NIce pics! That has been one of my favorite trails so far. And yes very doable with IFS. Ran it with no lockers or sliders and no body damage. Toyopnoy, have you regeared yet?

Marc P 02-11-2007 07:35 AM

Looks like fun....too bad you guys didn't plan this more than 1 day in advance. I would have tried to make it.

Nope haha, still have the 4.30's with the auto tranny. So you can only imagine how fun the drive up was. Thank God for noobs going up the mountain the same time we were haha...im going to regear when i get the solid axle up front so that I won't have to buy a 7.5" gearset as well.

we need to plan another big bear run when it gets warmer!

Smiling_Jim 02-11-2007 09:04 AM

Hey Pat, Great pics...

Ya, Pat actually cleaned some stuff that I struggled on. Much of the trail and most of the creek crossings were off camber to the left.

I two wheeled it several times... I was wishin I had a 200 lbs spotter for ballast...

Look at the green cruiser pic. That's the trailboss who tore his driveshaft in half...

Sorry about the late invite. I didn't want to post and then not make the run. I finished the new shackles and mounts Friday afternoon.

We can do it again with more notice.. I need BALLAST though....

Great pics..thanks for sharing. It's been 10 years since I've been on that trail. Looking forward to going again now that I'm back into "wheeling" mode :)

Good pics. Looks like you guys had some fun up there. We should try to plan a May trip.

Hey Jim - Did those shackles give you any extra travel?

Smiling_Jim 02-11-2007 04:28 PM

It looks like the shackles are workin...

There is a rock near the house where I can ramp the truck.

Will try to get some pics and measurements.

wifesaysimadumbass 02-11-2007 04:30 PM

Smiling_Jim 02-11-2007 06:42 PM

miguelitro 02-11-2007 08:12 PM

i'd like to run that one someday.

smilingjim-asked this on ttora as well but were you on a ttora run at corral canyon east of SD acouple years back? \
Mike

Smiling_Jim 02-12-2007 02:49 PM

Mike,

Yup, I got a crawler now to go with my Taco.

No dirt bikes yet, though.

Be sure and let us know when Corral Canyon opens, I want to run Sidewinder as well...

Compass Creek 02-12-2007 04:32 PM

Jim were there any downed trees across the trail? It's my clubs Adopt A Trail.

Toyopnoy 02-12-2007 06:06 PM

Yup there was one huge tree downed right before a descent and the creek crossing...

Compass Creek 02-12-2007 07:23 PM

Is it blocking the trail? If so how big around would you say it is? Traveling west to east that would be the first rock garden there are two ways inthe garden, the steep decent and the other is a well traveled bypassthat takes you around to the bottom of the decent. Basically what I'm looking for is if it is blocking the trail and people are going off trail to get around it. Thanks for your help!

Toyopnoy 02-12-2007 08:00 PM

The diameter of the stump had to have been abou 24". If we are talking about the same steep descent, is the bypass to the left? If so, the fallen tree is blocking the bypass pretty much completely. There is just enough room to get around the stump to the right to get to the descent, then you have to reverse the truck and reposition in order to be facing straight down the descent...hope this helps.
