After leaving Rics we decided to go check out Pikes peak.
Pretty sure this is it on the horizon.
https://img86.imageshack.us/img86/86...4medium9qn.jpg

Once we got there we started climbing the drive to the top of Pikes Peak.
https://img86.imageshack.us/img86/15...8medium1rx.jpg

Ice on the water. Something you never see in Texas. Or at least Dallas.
https://img47.imageshack.us/img47/67...1medium8nh.jpg

We were throwing rocks at the ice trying to break it but it wouldn't break. I through the biggest rock I could and it just slid across it. It was still to scary to walk on.

We are heading for those switchbacks.
https://img86.imageshack.us/img86/53...4medium7bm.jpg

In the dirtiest car.

Climbing. That is the same lake we where just at.

It seemed like everywhere I looked, there was a better shot than the last.
https://img47.imageshack.us/img47/35...3medium2dy.jpg

Everything is a picture in the mountains.
https://img47.imageshack.us/img47/11...5medium5wp.jpg

Look at that!

Colorado Springs...

https://img96.imageshack.us/img96/60...3medium0gn.jpg

The road was awsome.
https://img96.imageshack.us/img96/35...9medium0bl.jpg

High winds forced them to close the last 4 miles of the 19 mile drive to the top.
https://img161.imageshack.us/img161/...3medium6dx.jpg

Cool rocks
https://img96.imageshack.us/img96/67...4medium7fj.jpg

Going back down.

I think I took like 100 pics on that road alone. It was really cool.

After Pikes Peak, we went one last time to wally world. We got junk. I wanted ice cream and they were haveing a sale on orange sherbet, so I got it knowing fully that I wouldn't eat it all and have to throw some away. But who cares, where on vacation right? After eating to my hearts content, we stopped for gas or something and I put the ice cream on the roof because it was cold out and I thought it might slow down the melting process. I put it in the little Xterra cubby box on the top.

We started driving south to see the last thing of the trip.
The great sand dunes. Plenty of storms popping over the mountains to take pics of.

https://img131.imageshack.us/img131/...7medium9yq.jpg

https://img123.imageshack.us/img123/...0medium4tj.jpg

After a while I noticed something drooling across my window. OH CRAP! Forgot about the ice cream!

miraculously the lid stayed in the cubby while the tub, at least half full, flew out.
https://img123.imageshack.us/img123/...9medium4zm.jpg

hahahahahahaha!
https://img123.imageshack.us/img123/...3medium9ud.jpg

https://img123.imageshack.us/img123/...5medium5ct.jpg

https://img162.imageshack.us/img162/...1medium8xo.jpg

By the time we got to the dunes it was closed and getting dark. So we made a stop in the nearby town for the night.
https://img162.imageshack.us/img162/...0medium6yc.jpg

Driveing back to the dunes from the town. I just love how the mountains are above the clouds!
https://img123.imageshack.us/img123/...6medium2mm.jpg

Here they are. The camera doesn't really show how big these things really are.
https://img162.imageshack.us/img162/...3medium7yc.jpg

All those little dots on the dunes are people climbing to the top.
https://img162.imageshack.us/img162/...0medium5dl.jpg

That was a SNOW storm heading our way. With all the climbing I was burning up, the storm looked like fun.
https://img123.imageshack.us/img123/...2medium1ir.jpg

We walked all the way to the top and ran down the whole thing. It was exhausting but tons of fun.

All in all it was a great trip. Lots of memories. Tons of fun. We only spent 400 each out of our 500 budget. Colorado is a magical place. Which is why I am moving there in June. This trip took about a day to plan and most of that day was actually spent in front of an x box 360. All you need is a map, and a place like colorado and you won't be dissapointed. Also, if your going to go on a trip like this, especially to colorado, post up on the board and people will readily help make it the best trip ever.

If you stuck around and actaully read this I commend you. Let me know what you think about anypart, everyone loves feedback.

One more gay pic of me.

Get it done.

It's funny how amazing simple things seem when you're from Texas eh... ;)

Looks like a fun trip, except for the 2wd Pissan (I'll bet you were missing your Runner). So was that the first time you've ever been riding (snowbarding)?

Cheers

Dave

One More Time 03-24-2006 09:25 AM

:rockin: Great thread! Put me down for the next road trip :rockin:

FingerMan20 03-24-2006 12:27 PM

Chris, I hate you. I want to go. Now. Let's go. I'll pay for it all.

Just kidding... Looks like fun, though.

getitdone 03-24-2006 01:09 PM

It was so awsome! I was just showing Cassie some footage. We have like 40 min of video from the trip!

rocket 03-24-2006 04:01 PM

Heck yeah! Nice story line and pictures! It was definitely cool hitting up Loveland with you guys and meeting another YT wheeler. Colorado does kicks ass and like i said, if you need help with anything when moving out here just let me know.
:banger:

How much did you guys spend in gas money? Was that part of the $400 each?

A sweet place you missed seeing but drove right near a few times is 'Red Rocks' (off 470 and Morrison). It's similar to Garden of the gods but you can actually drive all throuh it.

I'm still surprised by how many things you guys did and how many places you saw in a just a weeks time. Freakin' awesome!

Very sweet photos guys and I know exactly how you feel since I spent almost my entire life in Texas and Moved to Colorado last year after taking 4 road trips here (1 a year). It's funny to see how amped you all are about the same stuff I was when I first took a roadtrip here. Anyway, now that I live here I never take it for granted like some of the folks that grew up here....

I am regularly going places all over colorado on the weekends, when I get back to work on monday they ask where I went... I answer, and it usually follows with a puzzled look... "Where?"

Best of luck on moving out here, it's worth it... I'm so incredibly happy to be here everyday

P.S. and when Ric isn't housing people he is helping me wrench on my truck... much props to RIC

I think it was about 450 all together for gas.
Yeah, 400 each for food, gas, gear, tickets...everything. Its amazing how much you can save by staying away from hotels.

Shiner5 05-29-2006 04:15 PM

Great trip.

That getting stuck part reminds me of several stories. Losing keys in the snow for one. The best one for me was in CO above St Elmo near the Mary Murphy turn off. It was early June and snow was still covering the road. I blew through a drift or two in my old 2x Ford. Then I came up to a drift I knew better than to try. I started backing up. In a wide spot, I decided to try a 38 point turn around. On point 28 I think, we got stuck. There was a layer of black ice under the snow. Three hours later we were out. At the expense of some old boards, a blue hydraulic jack, and finally a chain that we wrapped around the tire. For an hour of that, the drivers front tire was hanging off the side of the road. A shift in weight would have dropped that track down a few hundred feet through some trees. Good times.

Wow that is too much. I have been pretty stuck before, but not ice like that night. And not hanging off a cliff either.
