Now that's what I call a fun wheeling trip. Sometimes I prefer that arrid type of desert over the Front Range high mountains Plus, wrecked up old mining junk is always sort of surreal and fascinating. looks like fun.

lofreqjeff 01-23-2006 05:51 PM

It was the most challenging trip I have ever been on too. the other 2 cameras have alot of pics of my rig. I just bought brand new MTR's and this was their test. I didn't slip, get stuck, or ever feel uneasy about any of the terrain. The tires I replaced were basically street tires with pretty much Zero tread on them, so when I went wheelin in the past I spun and slid around alot. I would have NEVER have considered going out to this trail with my truck 2 weeks ago.

Did you air 'em down? It's amazing how much it helps. Hey, don't they still hang people for rustling cattle in AZ? Lol.

lofreqjeff 01-23-2006 06:10 PM

OOOH yeah I air'd them down. They say on the side wall max PSI 50 and since this is my daily driver too, I usually ride with at least 45. But, on the trails I usually go down to around 20. I have a portable air compressor that I take so I can air-up when we get back to pavement. I live about 60 miles from where these pics were taken so that's too long of a ride to not have the right air pressure. It's like 99% freeway from the trail head to my place.

That water crossing looked like fun! I'm all rarin to go wheeling now. Up here there is snow on most all the trails. It can make it interesting when you get higher up in the mountains. Did you check the pics from our Crystal Mountain trip?

lofreqjeff 01-23-2006 06:26 PM

I did see them...they are sweet! I use to wheel when I lived in Michigan, so I know what its like to be out in the snow. Soooo much fun, but a whole different set of rules. The water wasn't too bad this time. It wasn't as deep as I expected. Our "trail guide" (the white ranger) He has lived right by these trails his entire life, so he went down to the river a few days ago and said it was almost inpassable, but aparently not!

spindleshanks 01-23-2006 06:48 PM

Yeah, water is unpredictable. There's a trail here in CO that I want to do this summer, and the water is supposed to be impassable till like June. So I did the diff breather mod, and I've got some lift waiting to be installed on my Taco. I'm ready for it!

lofreqjeff 01-23-2006 07:08 PM

I really want to do the Diff breather mod amongst other things. I want to do the things that I NEED to do before I start doing things I want to do. All my friends talk about getting a lift and 33"-35" tires, yada yada yada..... It all sounds great in theory, but there are so many other things that need to be done that will make the rig that much better. I NEED a rear locker! and thats something that I won't have to mod if/when I get a lift. Same goes for the breather mod, yeah, I will prob need to extend the breather hose, but thats a $3 mod. I'd really like to get a snorkel for 2 reasons - first, as you said, water is unpredictable, and cuz I think it looks cool. Granted, I live in the desert, but I am suprised as to how many rivers and streams there are that need to be forged to get from trail A to trail B out here.

Well, here is Part 2 of our trip........... enjoy! Good thing about these pics, is that there are more pics of my truck than I had on my camera!!

Sliders for me, but they're waiting on a body lift. It's a chain of events that must be followed in the correct order.

And now for part 3, the final chaper of our trip to the Coke Ovens! Enjoy!!
