Anza Borrego Run

Hey all. This was a TTORA Run but we did have 2 4Runners out there representing. Jared did the Medium run and had to tug out a burried FJ and I did the hard run and ended up tow strapping a fully exo caged crawler for over 10 miles of trails.

I had a great time as usual with the entire group! Good wheeling, good weather, cool rigs and Great People.

Thanks to all the TTORA that organized this run again this year.

TFJ-4runner 11-13-2006 06:43 PM

Great pictures man, you didn't happen to post a video of the daylight run did you?

ecchamberlin 11-13-2006 07:11 PM

Not trying to pimp out TTORA or anything, although it is a good group, but there are tons more pics of the runs on there.

Chris, the guy with the exo'd /Cami'd /Toyota Truck (who I towed for many a mile ) is doing videos that always turn out really great as well. He will have some crazy Heart Attack Hill and The Squeeze pics/video soon.

TFJ-4runner 11-13-2006 07:25 PM

Ya man this is defiantly your rig and other YT members. I saw this video searching for 4runner videos. Picture 7 and 8 looked familiar.

That is one of Seth's (Deathrunner) great videos...the guy is creative.

I am glad it was not me towing that 85 out. And that is wayyyy more than 10 miles out.

deathrunner 11-14-2006 01:21 AM

I'm pretty sure the Deathrunner will not fit through the squeeze. If I had to, I'm sure i could get through it. But, I am positive I will grind up my fenders trying that one. OUCH!!!

ecchamberlin 11-14-2006 04:03 AM

I love that video! I have it on my desktop at work. Seth does fine work!

I think deathrunner could make it through the squeeze with out body damage. We can do some measuring though to make sure. That trail is so worth the effort. Cool obstacles at the beginning and then just flat out hauling butt prerunner type stuff for the last 10 miles or more as Marc seems to think. I will look it up on my GPS.

Last year I was hitting 50 MPH in the washes. Not this year with a rig in tow.

funrunner91 11-14-2006 08:58 AM

hi ecchamberlin, could you direct me to a online map or writen directions to get to Anza Borrego??? i'm tring to get out there this weekend for some camping and trail runs with the new rig

Stop by Sports Chalet and look for the San Diego Backcountry map. It's a 4x6 waterproof, tear-resistent map of mostly AB but some outlying areas as well. Best map I've had in a while. Sounds like a freakin' advertisement, huh? Anyway - go get a copy and let the exploration begin.

Yes it is a H1. We ran into a group of 10 highly mod'd H1's at Coyotee Canyon. All turbo diesels and with huge swampers. That guy climbed totally up that rock with just his drivers front wheel. So he must have been locked front and rear also. It did not flex at all on his way up. He had it at more than 60 degrees towards verticle.

We also saw a group of H2 and H3's on the 78. One of the guys in our group counted 32 rigs in that group and one FJC. It was kinda funny because a lot of them had the bling rims and full crome option. At least they were out there.

The Squeeze/Heart Attack Hill videos

The Squeeze obstacle. She is soooo tight! LOL

This hill is no joke. Even worse with an IFS rig. The degree of slope is insane.

Chris on TTORA (Wgasa84) Did a great job editing these videos for us.

Enjoy!

for some reason, it wasn't that bad when I went down that hill about 3-4 weeks ago.

ecchamberlin 11-21-2006 03:58 AM

Your Solid front axle probably helped out quite a bit.

Marc and I were talking last night about this also. I have saw coilovers in the front and they flex okay but then push right back down (rebounds) so I cannot rest on my bump stops. So front flex for me is not great. The rear is all twisted up. I am doing the Tundra front lift soon so that will help a lot.

deathrunner 11-21-2006 07:39 AM

Eric, if you had lighter springs over that shock, it would let you flex. I have the same exact front shocks and mine crosses up pretty well in a situation like that. I had Eibach make custom 450lb springs. I think the 3rd gens are a bit heavier, though.

Rebound time is measured once the weight is taken off of the suspension, when your weight is still on the suspension, it should stay compressed if the suspension is soft enough. The down side to my setup is body roll, but you have a sway bar......lucky. hahahha

WHen I had torsion bars on, I had dropped the nitrogen pressur from 200(stock) to 100psi, that seemed to soften things up a bit as far as the ride was concerned. Just some ideas.

RobT2k 11-21-2006 02:42 PM

From Schafer's website:

I tried 500 pound springs in place of the 650 pound springs that came with the Sway-A-Way shocks. Basically what happened is that you had to crank the nut up higher to get the same amount of lift. In the end the 500 and the 650 springs set at 2" of lift where the same. One had the nut cranked up to 3.5" of thread and the other only 2.75" of thread. The more you crank the nut up the stiffer the assembly gets. I took the blue springs off and sent them back since the 650 springs set at a lower level produced the same results. Another thing that occurred is that the higher the nut is cranked up the less it takes for the coils to fully compress and stack. The Revtek top out spacer and the ATS arms are really the only worthwhile ways to enhance the Sway-A-Way unit.

He's basically exhausted all possible avenues with the SAWs. I'm surprised at the way your experience has gone Eric, you got yours well after mine and they went downhill fast.

I'm still happy with the ride mine give, and I haven't run into the rust issues you have since I'm inland.
Good luck

ecchamberlin 11-21-2006 05:02 PM

Rob
I agree that you seem to have had much better luck with your saws. Mine have now rusted so badly that I cannot move either adj ring up or down at all. The heim joints at the bottom have also both failed and now are grooving out the shock bodies. I have ask the company to consider replacement and the reply I got was that they do not cover corosion at all.

We shall see what I get out of the Tundra/Tacoma lift and go from there. It would be no fun if it was easy right. To be honest I really enjoy working on my rig. Nothing has actually broken so it is not a huge head ache or anything. No worries.

deathrunner 11-22-2006 07:19 AM

Wierd, I wonder why mine flexes easier than the other LT trucks that I have run with. I thought it was the softer coils, Maybe it's because I don't crank in a ton of lift. Mine have rusted a little, and I'm pretty close to the coast, but nothing worse than my sliders or frame.

Oh well, I guess listen to schaefer, he knows what he's talking about. I wonder why they make different coil capacities then?

I'm curious what lengths the different coils were at, I believe you need longer coils when you go to a lighter weight.

ecchamberlin 11-22-2006 08:45 PM

Mine never did get cranked up a lot at all. I did the top out spacer at the top though.

sort of hijacking my own thread but hey...it is my thread right?
