so let me take a stab in the dark here: i was on newegg, and came across the new AMDs.. the phenom 6 cores, etc... the i7 blows any AMD out of the water and into pieces, correct? i only ask because AMD compared to Intel theres a price savings of about 200 bucks, but i know you get what you pay for...

Superior in terms of reliability, durability, and performance, correct?
As for my choice I will deff. Be going intel this time around, as I would like to dual boot windows 7 and mac os x snow leopard using vanilla kernel and stuff.
I played on my buddys i7 rig he built about 7 months ago or whatever... And holy Jesus! Has 2 1gb ati video cards in crossfire, 4 1TB hard drives in RAID, 16gb ddr3 ram, and a 40" HD LCD. First time I truly enjoyed gaming since I built a pentium4 3ghz HT with a geforce fx5950. Lol.
i7 it will be.
40" LCD optional

but I share the same thought as you, and the comparison for GPUs is pretty much the same; nVidia is the Intel of GPUs, while ATI is the AMD for obvious reasons

my 4870 was cheaper than an nVidia of equal power a year ago the 4870's are dirt cheap now, and work pretty darn good!

Present-gen nVidia gpus are poop, they really dropped the ball this go-around, though I expect they'll have learned from Fermi's mistakes by the next-gen. Right now AMD/ATI cards are the way to go, especially when wanting bang for buck.

I'm very pleased with my 4870 right now; have been for over a year
the original took a poop and I had to replace it, but I was satisfied enough with the performance to just replace it with the same card (well, different manufacturer... original was MSI. the new one is an XFX)
if it goes out again though, I'll probably upgrade, just 'cause

If you are still deciding I would recommend: CPU: AMD PII X2 555 Black edition .. best bang for the buck .. unlocks to quad and overclocks like crazy .. unless your set on i7 which is obviously alot better and great for hackintosh!
As for graphics card, NVIDIA GTX 460 hands down .. great card for the price.
let us know what you picked in the end.
