Angry External Hard Drive - Data Recovery? (Wheeling Movies are on it!)

Hey all,

I have a 4YO Western Digital External Hard Drive. It stopped working 2 years ago and I haven't done much with it. Unfortunatly it has several Wheeling Vids on it I want (That got pulled from YouTube) and I don't have them on my Desk-Top, and so I was wondering if anyone had expereience with this.

The Drive size is 60 GB I think.

At any rate It powers up when I plug it in via USB but I hear a very soft clunk every now and then which leads me to believe that the needle on the drive is skipping.

The costs I am seeing are like $350. I won;t try and recover at that price. Can't afford it.

Thoughts?

i would say it's toast at this point... and, as you have found out - data recovery is very expensive.

i would give a little jiggle* when powering it up and see it will come up and mounts on the desktop or under My Computer.

* at this point don't be afraid to be a little aggresive

i've recovered data from thunking drives using this technique.

just remember, if it mounts, you probably only have that one chance to copy your stuff!!!

good luck.

i remember back in the early mid/late 90s when WD was leading the hard drive market with affordable drives with 1.2gb...

we had ordered approx. 500 workstations with WD hard drives and had a failure rate of approx. 20%.

we were replacing about 2/3 hard drives a week.

we got to the know the tech that did the warranty service and we would call him and he would send out the replacement drives.

he got tired of driving to the university - lol.

eventually whatever was wrong with the 1.2gb drives were fixed with the 1.6gb drives so as drives died we were upgraded.

i know it's been awhile but i can say i've seen WD drives go bad.

you could try an ata/sata to usb adapter and see if the drive will come back...

http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-USB-DS...2722273&sr=8-1

there are a lot of different types.

--- or remove the drive from the external enclosure and, if ata/ide, connect to your desktop .

depending on your equipment there are things that can be done.

good luck.

I just got it back up and I am going to move all my music off of it (40GB) onto another WD passport I have for now.

Any suggestions on brand or type of external to get for music? I am wanting something that lasts longer then this but this drive does get some use due to me shuffling music all day as I work in the home office. Maybe a case with a fan? Any certain type of drive (besides solid state that I cannot afford) that better? Or is this a crap shoot?

A friend told me one time years ago (when we still used 3.5" floppys and the 5.25 was just recently phased out but software was still available on them)...
about some problems with his hard drive... he bought a new one disassembled them put the discs from his old one in the new case and recovered most of the data... the he put the new discs in the old case took it back because it "did'nt work" and exchanged it... [cheating thieving bugger]... don't think you can do that anymore though with these new ultra high density drives...

For what it's worth, external USB drives can be finicky about how much juice they can get from the USB port. I have 2 80GB USB hard drives, and they only work on certain powered USB plugs that are directly on the mobo; if the plug doesn't have enough juice they just sit there and make a clicking noise and won't mount (because they can't spin up).

I would try plugging the drive into other plugs and other computers, you might find one with the magic combination...
