So I was thinking it would be good idea to get a CB radio to stay in contact with hunting and wheeling buddies out in the boonies, also to get weather updates and emergency contact with local LEO. I am new to this idea and was reading up on this http://jeephorizons.com/tech/cb_radio_basic.html
and have come to find its not very complicated. What the normal range for a cheaper CB like a Cobra or like this one http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-19DXIV-4.../dp/B00083KUVS

What would you guys recommend. Size and the way it looks doesn't matter to me, I would like the best bang for my buck!

I have a cobra in my Toyota and im running duel 3ft fire whip antennas i get about 5 mile range clear and then its fuzzy. i payed 20 for my cobra cb from a friend its a cobra 29LTd then the antennas cost like 60 dollars new but you can find them cheaper and i run duels so yea, heres my setup.

I have a Midland 1001LWX, which receives weather info. I paid $40 for the radio, tuned it myself (instructions on youtube; it's super easy) and put a Road Noise EC2016 turbo powermic with talkback on it ($60) and the finished product is great. Guys with tuned Cobra's have asked me "What kind of radio is that; it sounds great" and I reply "It's just a $40 radio with a little TLC and a powermic." It might not last 30 years, but for the last 3, it's turned a few heads. I run it bearfoot, and 5+ miles range out of it with a 3' Everhart SOTT antenna mounted to the toolbox (great antenna btw) is the norm, 7+ on a good day, and 10+ once or twice. If I had it to do over, I'd buy it again. In my eyes; that little radio is a keeper. Good audio on it too.

A good antenna and placement makes a lot more difference than -+$20 for a radio. Pretty much anything you get above $40 will be pretty decent. So long as you're not trying to make contact with people over 5 miles away, pretty much anything will work.
