Midland GXT 850

Just ordered a set of these.
These are a hot new item, and waterproof.
Was looking at the Motorola 8550s, but these have more power and more features.
Will have these in the rig for emergency backup, not really for wheeling.
Always wanted a set, and these seem to be very nice.
More info at the URL above too.

The Midland GXT-850 boasts an amazing 5 watts of power, allowing for a range of up to 26 miles in optimal conditions (typically 2 miles or less in urban conditions). The GXT-850 is designed with the hunter in mind, featuring a "Mossy Oak" color and silent operation feature.
The GXT-850VP4 is a full featured radio that includes everything you need! This value pack includes rechargeable batteries, a charger with AC wall and DC vehicle adapters, and a pair of headsets with microphones.
The GXT-850 is a waterproof radio, meeting JIS4 specifications. This is a significant advancement over other consumer radios! Most models are "weather resitant" which means they will take a light rain, but the GXT850 is fully submersible in water!

He he he...
I have had these since June. I bought them for Airsoft.
They do work great. It will crack you up though. They have animal call sounds.
The first time i had them out playing airsoft i didn't turn off the call feature. I bent over and accidently hit the button. Next thing you hear is a buck sound coming out everyone on my teams headsets. They weren't to happy. They laughed for a bit.
Range on them work great.

Yeah, they say like 22 miles?
So you have the same set, cool.
I will bring mine on the run this weekend.
The car charger is cool too, something the Motorola 8550/8500s did not have.
In the future, these will be kept on the back door from a future mod I am getting.

I gotta get a license.

GMRS from what I Have been reading up on, has more power output than FRS.
5 watts for the former, 1/2 watt for the latter.
If you are purchasing a two way radio that operates using GMRS frequencies, and plan to use it withing the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that you register for a GMRS license.

I've been using GMRS radios for a while and I never got a license...I honestly don't know how they would track it. If you want to be completely legit and you plan on using them a lot then you should probably go ahead and get the license...but I have yet to do so.
Just my $.02, those do look like an awesome set of radios Corey, they have them at my local Wal-Mart (I was shocked) and I have almost picked them up several times...but I just don't really have the need for them yet. I'm sure I'll end up getting them anyway though....

They came a day early, I am quite impressed.
They came with fully charged ni-cad packs, but one is on the charger, I am getting use to the menu on the one.
To many dang features!
It has privacy codes which are cool for the channels, but it can also be setup to just talk with members or one individual in your group.
Lotta menuizing to get to those features though, I will just leave it on normal mode.
I has three power settings for the GMRS, and just the standard 1/2 watt for the FRS setting.
I have ten weather stations, and it picks up about four here really great.
This will come in really handy.
Since most of us run channel four for 4x4 on the CB radio when out wheeling, do most of you use channel four on these units too?

They work great!
Crystal clear.
The furthest I have used them so far though is a few miles last time I was up at Greenwater.
I was yakking with some others up there, and it was working pretty good with all the trees and hills up there.
For what you get with this set:
Voice activated headset
dual charger
12v adapter to use the dual charger base in your rig
It was worth the money.

Can anyone please tell me how to voice activate my GXT Midland? We ride motorcycles and we can not get it to voice activate. The only way we can hear each other is to push a button which we can not do while riding the Goldwings... Thanks so much!

Midland are good walkie talkie. I got the Midland GXT 1050 vp4. This one was strong that I was over riding some motorola and they got annoyed cause I kept cutting them off... They have to change channel... lolz The gxt1050 farthest I could reach is about 50+ miles, even though it is a 36 miles range. I have try all other model and the gxt1050 perform very well. I use rechargeable double AA's to maintain its power. They last longer than the one that came with it.
SF49erLaLA... You need to turn on the VOX. Go to MENU and activate the VOX. You do not need to press the talk. All you need to do is talk and it do it for you. Any sound will activate it to transfer.
