2nd gen 4runner "hidden sub" ideas?

EDIT!!! Goto post # 34

Lately, I have been craving more bass from my current audio setup. (Aftermarket HU, stock speakers). Just like alot of other people, I would like to add a sub but need my cargo space.

I havent seen it on this site, but has anyone mounted a sub in one of the rear storage compartments on a 2nd gen? I was thinking I could get a 10" sub and use the storage compartment, along with a front panel (wood or fiberglass) to create the cabinet. Of course, the small space would require a sub with minimal cabinet sq. ft. requirements. In a small cab. would it be better if sealed?

I was also thinking of mounting the amp behind the rear panel or possibly under a seat.

Has anyone done this? pics? Ideas?

Thanks

they make the kick panels but I didn't see any for the rear. You could always fiberglass a custom one.

I saw a thread in this section where a guy put 2 12s in those spots. Im thinkin about putting dual 10s in mine. They should fit but if you want a more versitle speacker with good bass pick up some pioneer 5 way 6x9s and custom fit them in the back stock speacker location.

I have 6x9s in my Explorer and nothing compares (bass wise) as adding a sub IMHO. Since there is not much room back there I would probably go with a single 10" on one side and keep the other compartment open for tools, etc.

Did any of the the stock 2nd 4runners come with a factory sub? I am relatively new to 4runners but a lot of Explorer owners add a after market sub to a factory sub enclosure and install it.

I am going to run out and measure the space. If/when I end up doing this I will be sure to do a write up with lots of pictures (:

sdstud212001-I have never fiberglassed but always wanted to...I guess now I have an excuse!

a buddy of mine just added a kicker solo baric to his '92. we ran through all the same questions/solutions you have...we ended up setting it up in a normal, space consuming box that sits in the cargo area. he camps out of the back of his runner so we wanted something that would solve both his bass and space problems. without wanting to sacrifice storage area, we set up his amp on the passenger side behind the stock plastic panel just above and to the rear of the wheel well (completely stealth). we then added a binding post terminal cup to side panel to make it easy in, easy out. so now, when he wants to bump (most of his commuter miles) he's go the sub. when he wants to haul/camp, he pulls it out and sets it in the garage. pretty simple set up that comes across very, very clean without any hack-job cutting of the storage compartments. hope this helps stir some ideas.

oh yeah, forgot to mention...we went with the 10" solobaric in a ported box (i think it was 1.2 cf and an 8" long port 12 si of surface...it was a box that is made by kicker for the sub)...pretty compact set up that hits very, very hard. the square solobaric has more surface area than a comparable round 10" sub and therefore displaces more air thereby increasing the sound pressure (i.e. bass). again, hope this helps. think through whatever you're going to do and remember that more often than not, the pro's and companies who have set up subs with boxes usually can do it a whole lot better than we can in our garage. i've built quite a few boxes and the first ones really left a lot to be desired. with time and a lot of the experienced guys' advice, boxes get better. but for out and out reliability, trust what the pro's have already done.

I built a fiberglass box in the tool kit area of my '89 4Runner that used an 8" Kicker L7 square. I made a new door the was actually a screen, but it looked more stock than normal and sounded awesome.

you can cut out under the seat, under the other side of the rear seats, not the side of the jack. and yes you can put subs on the doors of the rear storage.

Crap...I wish my old hard drive hadn't kicked the bucket. There was a site, and I believe the link was posted here, about a guy with a 2nd gen who did a custom MDF/fiberglass enclosure in place of his passenger side storage cubby in the back, using a 10" JL Audio sub. When he was done, it was very trick. On the driver's side, he mounted his power distribution block and capacitor. If memory serves, he built an amp rack into the roof...

Anyone remember seeing this one?

I saw a 4runner that had a 15" sub in the floor, with an enclosure built underneath where the spare goes. The SPL was insane...

Check out the audio section at T4R.org. There are tons of examples of what you're looking to do.

If you dont want to do anything custom the bazooka tube things sound pretty good they are an 8 in sub with amp built in they arent going to hit as hard as a regular setup but it is the way to go to save space.

Here is a picture of how I did my 10's into the storage compartments. I made the face's 13x13 I belive got to go measure for sure been so long ago now.

But they are 3/4 mdf to move them out just a taste to get the required .75 cubic feet airspace per speaker after putting the dynamat behind them and the depth so they don't bottom out on the plasticback side of the storage area.

The sound is great and they thump pretty good I find most people are shocked to hear old school Metallica , Iron Maiden and not that rap crap pounding out of a lifted truck hehehe

Thats what I am talking about!

Did you use the plastic bins for the backs of the enclosures? Are they sealed?

I was thinking of building a box to put in place of the cargo bins...but I dont have the resources at the moment.

How did you attach the 13"x13" panels with the subs on them?

thanks
