bumper build-up

First off, I have a winch bumper but it sits too low and is too short. I wanted something similar to what SigEp4Runner did. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f88/...inally-219699/

My original bumper is the first pic and the next is what my plan is.

the old one has brackets set to the bottom of the frame and i added a 3'' body lift. plus the time to add to the old one to make it like the new one would actually be inconvenient. I like the idea, trust me i wish i could...that was my first option

if i use 1/8'' metal all around and gusset the bottom of the winch box(blue triangles) will this be enough to support the winch without bends?

I would use at least 1/4" plate for mounting the bumper on to and the gussets for it. 1/8" is not going to be strong enough for heavy awkward pulls.

my old bumper is 1/4'' and doesn't have any gussets at all plus it's only stitch welded not solid. i figured if i put (4) 1/8'' gussets under the bottom plate and ''skid plate'' it would hold but i may be wrong after all this is my first structural fabbing that i have done so any ideas would be good.

why not just go ahead and use 1/4?

or 3/8's

i'd rather have something and not need it, than need something and not have it.

Red face

Your bumper is only going to be as strong as what it is attached to.

Are you planning to bolt this or weld this to the truck??

Or are you making your own welded on brackets that the bumper will bolt too.

I also have a tendency to over build things as well.

That is a call only you can make.

Happy fabbing

ok so im in a slight situation. this is how the mock up cardboard sits to how i want it. it sits 3'' above the frame under the winch box and about 2'' from the gusset to the frame. does anybody know where to get a bracket or what i can do?

make a bracket that you bolt to the frame and weld it to bottom of the winch box and what ever else you can make it touch

so that bracket would be bolted to the both the frame and the bumper?

that looks like it can be easily re fabed if you remove your body lift

ok so i have figured out what i'm going to do and please correct me if y'all think it can't handle it. i want to bolt my winch to a 1/4'' plate and have that plated welded or bolted on to the front cross member. doing this will eliminate the winch box and i can make my bumper out of 1/8'' and the bumper itself wont have any stress at all.
