As far as I know the 22re in the 85's didn't hit till later in the model year making them the incompatible block to the 20r head. Not sure what to think with the Celicas though. But I don't think any of those 22R-EC engines from the Celicas made it into any of the trucks.

The first fuel injected 22R-E engines appeared in August 1982.
Output of these engines is commonly rated at 105 hp (78 kW) at 4,800 rpm and 137 ft·lbf (185 N·m) at 2,800 rpm.
In 1985, the engine was significantly reworked, output was up to 112 hp (84 kW) at 4,600 rpm and 142 ft·lbf (192 N·m) at 3,400 rpm. Many parts from the newer 22R-E are not compatible with those from the older pre-1985 engine. Non-compatible parts include the cylinder head, block, pistons and many of the associated parts such as the timing chain and cover, and water and oil pumps (although the oil pump internals are the same). These changes also affected the 22R, therefore one can consider the 85-95 22R-E as a fuel injected version of the 85-90 22R with only minor differences if any.

by the looks of that valve cover that's a short deck (85+) motor. As evident from the straight up and down front versus the tall deck slanted front. So I guess the 86+ engines were put into the earlier 85 trucks. I still stand by my statement the 85 22re's are not compatible to the 20r head. At least not the ones in our trucks. Have to assume the guy was talking about the 22re truck engines and not the ones from the celica.
75-84 20R/22R/RE I am assuming the RE is from the celicas not the trucks.
94-95 22R/RE 85-93 were very similar but had 2 less holes.

I agree 20r head is not compatible with 22r motor. Just as fyi, I had an '84 4runner with a 22r that was identicle to the 22re in every way except for the intake, it was built in november of 1985. So I take it that 1984 was when they first released the 22r just not fuel injected.

To the OP, the motors are both chain driven but the Scion head is short were the chain is in front of the cylinder head, unlike the 22re motors where the cylinder head wraps around the chain. Looking at the headgaskets of both engines there is just too much difference to do this without pretty much making a new cylinder head.
