Thumbs down Doh. No more 4wd

4wd wont engage.
When I did a box canyon run a month ago 4wd had some trouble engaging.
I crawled underneath the truck and saw that the air line coming from the transfer case had come off. I put it back on and then got it to re-engage.
Now it won't engage at all. Crawling under the truck and having danica hit the 4wd button (its an 01 so it has all wheel drive and push button 4wd)
I can't even hear it trying. DOH!!
Any ideas of what to try??

This what my FSM says in the Transfer Troubleshooting section:

Shift from 2WD (H) to 4WD (H) impossible

1. 4WD fuse -
2. Wire harness -
3. Vehicle speed sensor - BE-45
4. 4WD position switch - TR-9
5. 4WD indicator light - TR-9
6. Actuator assembly - TR-49
7. A.D.D. control system - SA-48
8. 4WD control ECU - TR-49
9. Transfer assembly - TR-3

I can get you those sections it refers to if you don't have the FSM already.

Thanks! I'm going to see if the actuator is getting power to it. I may want to try finding the 4wd fuse as well.

That, my friend.. seems extremely inappropriate.

I guess you have determined that is what the problem is, or are you still troubleshooting?

Make a junkyard run for that actuator if indeed that is the part.

So "they say" I paid $110 for toyota to look at it and the guy says that is fairly common on the 01 to 02 4runners with the electric transfer case.
DOH!

No luck so far.

Not yet. I'm sitting at a tent in Hurricane Utah so its hard to do research borrowing a buddy's computer. (new job, I'm marking trails and logging them in via GPS.)

HERE IS THE QUESTION:
Can a TACOMA or 4runner Transfer case from a NON electronic year (taco 95.5-04 or 4runner 96-00) be swapped into mine to make it a hand actuated model. I have no idea. If anyone can figure that out, let me know. I can get a transfer case cheap used. I just don't know if it will actually WORK.

I will be home for about 5 days and then I'm headed out again for another 14 days of trail work. I have to get that sucka fixed in the few days I'm home.

What say you?!?

You "may" be able to put a Manual Hub case in and then convert to manual hubs. There are a lot of "maybes" in that. You need to find out what the t-case does with the a-trac and if it ties into the t-case.

01-02 are the red headed bastard step child's. They SAS'd an 01 and as far as I can tell it went straight to the crusher. With a computer from a 1996 just to get it to run.

Steve,

I'm looking at a tacoma thats in camp with us and it seems like a non-electrical transfer case from a 96-00 would bolt right up.
The A-trac is just a system wired into the brakes as far as I can tell.
I would just go from an electronic motor to actuate 4wd to a lever. No?

Yes, But what about the entire vaccume system? I don't think you realize what that entails.

If you got all of it, sure, but them what about your different transmission and t-case? All electronic and certainly tied into the front diff actuator. I don't think you realize how different 01-02 are from 96-00.

I could have sworn Steve and I had this same conversation a few years ago. I like my '01 but the tranny and electronics keep us from playing with the big boy toys like crawlers and a straight axle.

Do you have a copy of the '01 FSM to see get into the weeds of what may be involved?

I think you're right. I thought that all years had a vacuum system. I can get a tranny and xfer case for a 98, but I don't know if that would solve all of the issues.

I'm thinking that finding an 01 and getting that stupid electronic motor is the easy way to go.
I just refuse to pay 950 for a piece of crap that I can manually engage...
