Axel Rebuild Questions???
Hey Guys,
I know at least Jermey and Matt have recent experiance with this but I pose this to everyone. I was leaving a parking lot today and I head a slight grinding or milling type sound coming from what seemed to be the front axel. I think I remember Jermey saying something about backing plates and there being 4 of them that might need to be replaced. Is this sound a precursor(sp) to those going bad and needing to be replaced???
Also I took off Spring Break which is a week and a half starting Friday and I would really like to do a re-build over that time. Who has the best re-build kit and do you think it could get to me in time to do it this coming week sometime?
Lastly are there any special tools I will need to do the re-build???
Thanks in advance.

there is a 54mm nut inside there on each side. We got it off with a screwdriver, but that might not work. Other than that it is real easy. All Pro has the most complete kit, have fun

i dunno about a grinding sound, i hope its not the birfs. I'd have to hear it in person to know.
bring it to raleigh and ill help you do a complete front rebuild on it and figure out whats wrong, probably take like 3-4 hours. ive got the complete front rebuild kit still in the box that i was gonna use on my now spare axle. Its 100 bucks from all-pro. You dont need to worry about them shipping it, just come to raleigh

bearings or birfs is my vote the allpro kit has everything except inner and outter bearings which might just be your problem
the hardest part for me was puttin the allpro stearing arms into the knuckles -- also you will love the cone washers (and if you have any extra with nuts i am missing one)
be careful getting out the old seals as jermey knows there is a bearing in there. dont hit it too hard (i thought it was just a seal) you will bend your inner bearing, i did but just bent it back straight although i had an extra for my cruiser.
that 54mm (2 for each side) "toyota exclusive" so they say but i put groves in the nut with a flat head and hit with a hammer to losen and tighten, i know its not to torque specs and they say if you dont torque right then it doesnt seat the bearings correctly but most do it with a hammer and screwdriver, actually jon says theres a current thread on this topic
its pretty easy esp if you do one side at a time unlike me who was in the dark

Yeah I figured any tools you could suggest I could get my hands on no problem. It's great being personal friends with a indepent mechanic, he has thousands of dollors in tools, all Snap-On and Craftsmen, I can always find something there to borrow .
Jermey are you saying that you will sell me your kit or allow me to use your kit for the price you bought it if I come to Raleigh? That sounds like a kick ass deal if I can be on my way home all in the same day? Let me know I might just take you up on that offer. When's your spring break?
I just need to get this ball rolling on the lift and drivetrain overhaul. I'm tired of running on raggdy shocks and negevtive arch front springs. I want nice pretty black axels and shiney new springs and bling bling Bilsteins.

Grinding noise? Birfs don't make grinding noises.. just popping, cracking, and breaking noises.
Sounds like you've got some bad bearings...
And you NEED the 54mm socket. Hyperlite and Custom Cruiser are correct in saying that you can get the nut OFF w/ a socket, but you can't correctly put it on and preload the bearings w/o it. Too tight, and you screw your bearings... too loose, and you screw your bearings, and your wheel might eventually seize up and/or fall off. NOT a good thing.
Hyperlite/CC... you need a 54mm socket? I have two now... let me know and I'll bring em' next meet if you're in need.

one of those is mine biatch, i bought it that thing was like a $20 socket
it wasnt a metric socket anyway, it just fit real close. take one of the big ass nuts (wow that sounds bad) to the hardware store, or jason could post the size in inch units

It's 2 1/8's of an inch, and I told you I'd give you the $$$ for the socket and you told me not to worry about it b/c of the $$$ we're putting into the 4Runner... You don't love me anymore...

Aww you guys are so cute, like a little merried couple . Just kidding guys, thanks for the response Jermey. Let me look into the week and see when I can make the trip. How does your week look anything major. If we can get my axel done without much hassel then maybe I can help you and turn a wrench on your Runner. How close are you to bolting up that axel of yours?
