1990 3vze power loss on highway

Greetings!

I've searched the threads far and wide and I've found some folks with similar problems, but not quite the same.....so here goes......

I've got a 1990 3.0 manual with the 3VZE with about 185k miles on it. I'm experiencing major power loss when I start going up a long extended slope. Going up the freeway I'll have my pedal to the metal and I'll drop from 70mph to about 40mph....without letting up on the gas at all. I'm also getting horrible gas mileage, but I use the truck mainly for in town, so it doesn't surprise me that it's really bad, but we're talkin 11-13mpg.....which seems excessive. The engine purrs like a cat. No unusual sounds at all. My exhaust is shot, but I have a feeling that's not the problem. From time to time I get a CEL for the ECU/O2 sensor.....so I replaced the o2 sensor. No change.

Other things I've tried:

Cleaned air filter
checked for air bubbles in coolant (for fear that I've got a blown head gasket) (saw No bubbles)
Checked coolant for oil in it as well for fear of a blown head gasket. Looks clean as can be.
Took it to Goodyear and had them go through it and they essentially told me that they couldn't find anything and that it's just an old truck. (yeah, it'd be an old truck if it were made in Detroit, but as it's a Toyota it's just gettin started!
Auto part store guy suggested that it was my cat, so I took it off and drove up the freeway......no change.

I've read in posts where other guys have been having similar problems....and it's been suggested that they check to make sure their timing belt hadn't jumped a tooth or two. I haven't done this yet, but I wanted to get some feedback on if or not the engine would be running as smoothly as it is if the timing belt were out of wack?

Any suggestions? Feedback on the timing belt? Thanks!
