DC, does this provide better exhaust flow while eliminating the cracking problem or just get rid of the constant need to replace the cast POS's?
I just heard the infamous "tick tick tick" coming from the under the head shield so i would be expecting a call soon.

The main advantage is to eliminate the cracking problem inherent in the cast design.
It may provide marginally better flow, but I am not going to try and say this thing will blow your socks off. Members have reported what they feel is a small gain, but I do not have real world dyno numbers for it.

After too much research I am about ready to click the button to purchase this kit. Since it's real hard for me to part with cash, please tell me everything I want to hear: This kit WILL fit my '98 4Runner 4X4 automatic w/ 2.7 (yes, She's slow) and I should be able to tackle this myself in my driveway with common hand tools and above average (IMHO) mechanical aptitude? (I've seen the install pics). If I install this kit myself, the cost will be similar to buying a cheap cast unit and paying my mechanic to install. I'm willing to give up a weekend for better quality. BUT...
Next, please tell me the slight crack in my manifold MAY be the cause of a "off" odor coming from the exhaust. There are no engine lights but it seems as if what little power the engine has is diminished and there is a hot, slightly sulfur type odor after lugging up the steep hill to my house. I WANT to hear that I don't need to replace the cat so I can justify buying this setup. If there is a chance my cat is fried, I will have to buy the aftermarket cast POS in order to be able to buy the $230 converter (w/ pipe and flanges, NO welding).
I know, long term, my best bet is getting this kit AND replacing the cat if needed. However, I plan to sell my rig (I really hate to) because I NEED a pickup. I just want the rig in good running order for the purchaser.
Thanks for any input.

This kit WILL fit your 98 4Runner automatic as a bolt on upgrade (sans the heatshield, which can be modified per the thread). Degree of difficulty on install would be 2 out of 5. These are easily installed with simply hand tools, a few hours, and a beer or 3
I cannot answer the question about the cat, but I have run into problems with my own vehicles where a bad O2 sensor caused that problem. Easiest way to tell if the cat is toast is to unbolt the exhaust and peer in there, and see if the honeycomb is starting to melt.

Well, my check engine light lit on the way home yesterday. At best it'll probably be a sensor, at worst the cat. Anyway, it means more expense. I decided to source the '01 manifold separately and get the gaskets and nuts locally. It was a bit of a pia to find everything but it saved me $60 over the kit and thats $60 to use toward turning off that light. Since I'm attempting this repair myself, I'll try and share any useful insights I gain from the experience. Thanks for your help.

can you provide a link to the installtion instructions thread?
I would like to see the instructions and then determine if this repair is up my ally before purchasing the kit.
thank you.

I pulled the heat shield off and found no damage.. my theory is "if aint broke dont fix it" but like you said this is not a will it happen but when will it happen. that being said is it safe to leave the heat shield off for easier insepction?
