winch stronger with little or more cable spooled out?
ok me and a friend have been having a argument for about 6 months as to wether or not u get the full pulling capacity of your electric winch with all except 5 wraps out on the drum or least amount possible line out. every manual i read says u loose about 500 pounds of puling power for every wrap of cable on the drum he swears otherwise. somebody resolve this little argument THANKS

thank you GOOD TIMES i was right. he was trying to winch out out a 3 quarter ton dodge the other day from a ditch with a ramsey 9000 mounted on his jeep TJ from about 5 feet away from the bumper and he couldnt figure out why his winch kept bogging down. yes 4 one the truck weighs queit more than the 9000 winch and his 3500 lb jeep but i could not get him to back up 70 feet and anchor to a tree. It took Two toyotas in 4lo and his winch to get him out

Sounds like y'all need some practice/lessons on recovery.
First, the Jeep should have been anchored to something STURDY.
Next, you should have used a snatch block for a pull like that, essentially doubling the pulling power.
And yes, fewer wraps = more pulling power (best illustrated by Rob's post above)

Several people seem to think that a 6000 lb rated winch is fine for a 4Runner.
It's no where close to being fine.

Actually, it's why people need to use snatch blocks A LOT more than they actually do... (although with a 6000 lb winch, you better be ready to use it EVERY time!)

It came with one, but you can get them seperatly, and also ARB makes a nice looking one.
Phil (strap22) carries a lot of ARB stuff, see if he has them at www.trdparts4u.com and you can also PM him here to find out.

Someone actually thought 6k was enough? My old man has an 8k, and that barely cuts it. We use the snatch block almost 100% of the time, although i'm not sure it actually needs it, but we like to be on the safe side.

If I could wedge a 12k in my bumper I would. 6k is nowhere near enough and 8k is right on the border line... I have even stalled my 9.5k on a few really bad stucks...

EXACTLY. People don't seem to think of recovery gear as the life saving equipment it is... discussed to death in the "which winch other than warn" thread....
