NP435 or NP540 transmission

Just wondering if any one out that has run a NP435 or any of the HD NP540,541, or 542 transmissions.

The 54X is of course a 5 speed HD version of the NP435 with most of them having a 1:1 5th gear. It would seem this combo paired with a Dana 300 would a 2.66 low range would still give you a 102:1 craw ratio in first gear and be a very short trans/transfer combo.

What engine do you propose to mate to?? I ran one (435), in a '72 Ford truck, behind a 390, for more than 250.000mi, and it was still strong and quiet.

Althought they are short length, they are also pretty heavy and tall.

The NP435 is a very heavy-duty gearbox, overkill in 99%+ of Toyota applications. IMO.

It would not be a Toyota engine but I would estimate the power at 200hp/320tq estimated at the crank with 5.29 gears and heavy axles running 37+ tires.

The 435 would have no problem handling it. It's a strong tranny with very good parts availability.

Gotta love that low-low granny.

One of the reasons for considering the NP54X series transmissions is because some of them came with the extremely low first gear. Also the % change between gears is not as sharp as the NP435 ford series transmissions.

NP540 (O) 7.41, 4.05, 2.40, 1.48, 1.00
NP435 ford 6.69, 3.34, 1.79, 1.00

With a dana 300 and 2.66 low range you would effectively have a 102:1 craw ratio in first gear, If you decided to upgrade to a 4:1 low range you could get a first gear craw ratio of 152:1 with out the use of a double case. Also the combination of the NP435/NP54X with the dana300 and adapter would be roughly 23 inches.

My main questions are really based around the NP540 to NP435 bell housing compatibility. From my understanding the Ford NP435 and ford NP54X have basically the same housing. If that's true I would think you could simply swap a SBF bell hosing from a NP435 onto a NP540 series transmission and basically mount it to any transmission you wanted because of the adapters available.

IDK

Unlike most Toyota trannies, the Ford bellhousings are not so much of a semi-integral component of the tranny.

Many of the bellhousings for big-block Ford were less than 360' coverage (cast iron), and clutches could be changed by pulling the tranny and leaving the bellhousing on the engine.

I would guess that Ford small block bellhousings that fit 435 (mostly aluminum , as I recall) might be harder to find since many small block apps used lighter duty trannies.

Seems I do remember a friend who bought a brand new '71 pickup with a 302 and a 435 tranny though.

You'll likely get this answer from one of the Ford truck forums.
