What do you guys think about our upcoming Short Throw Shift Base?

Source: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...w-shifter-base

What sets our new base apart from other kits?

  • Includes Pre-modified Toyota Shift Handle
  • Includes the World's BEST Heavy Duty Seat and Socket
  • Low Profile Design for floorboard clearance
  • Made in USA from USA Billet Aluminum
  • Integrated Factory Toyota Breather

We know that used bases with good pivots are becoming harder and harder to find. This solution has all new parts and the pivots are 1) stronger than stock, and 2) rebuildable.
So what do you guys think?

I like that it retains OEM function with the breather. Its made in USA. You're including the shifter seats. And it looks to be a "bolt on" ready to go upgrade.

Thanks vital22re! The breather addition is nice for most 1994 and older rigs that don't have em - It's an upgrade that will reduce pressure and strain on older transmission seals.

dropzone,
You are in luck bud, we've been building and selling L45, L50, and L52 short throw kits since the late 1990s.
Here is a picture of our L52 short throw base. We just need to whip up a modified shift handle and you'd be able to pick one up today! Please give us a call for more info!

We also upgrade customers ordering our Heavy Duty rebuilt top covers to include our Short Throw base for L45/50/52 applications... Here is our HD rebuilt top cover:

Got some updates!

I broke the original link into applications on our site which can be found here: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/shifter-parts

We've set the price at $179 which includes the following:
  • USA made short throw base from USA billet aluminum
  • New 10.9-grade Pivots and a Toyota breather pre-installed
  • Modified and reconditioned Toyota shift handle
  • New Toyota shift handle boot
  • Our Heavy Duty USA-made Shift Seat
  • Our Heavy Duty USA-made Shift Socket
  • Four 8.8-grade 8x1.25mm base bolts
  • Four 8mm lock washers

The kit includes everything you need minus silicone. We are charging a refundable core charge on the shift handle, otherwise we'd run out of handles after a few months. We have handles organized here by application to match each order.

We've got the kit on a limited time Introductory Price of just $149 - saves about 17% and won't last long!

W-series applications are being made next. Stay tuned for more info on that!

The percent reduction is about 60%. We'll be posting an updated kit image as well as an animated image of the change in shifter throw soon!

I was able to snag a few install photos from a 3rd gen 4Runner, check em out:

You can see our HD shift seat installed:

Here is the new Toyota Boot:

Here you can see our reconditioned transmission shift handle:

Please let me know if you have any questions! We are really excited about this and have been shipping kits out the door all week long!

Regards,
BigMike

after installing one from the other guys (let's call 'em "other"), yours looks far superior. the two functions that really stand out are the low profile and single shifter piece. the other moved the whole base up into the tunnel, and depending on how high-up your tunnel is, you might need to cut it. also, the other's extension for the shifter did two un-wanted things: first, the set screw seemed flimsy, even staked, so i welded it. the second is that it moved the whole shifter up, instead of just the pivot point. the shift knob easily got in the way of the cup holders. the amount of extra cutting/welding/grinding was too much

i wish you guys had come out with this a few months ago. i would have purchased it in a heartbeat

Thanks for the comparative description irab88!

One thing to note is that our kit will also move the whole shifter up. The modification to the shift handle is done beneath the pivot point. So from the pivot up its the stock length, and since we have raised the pivot 1-inch the handle is also raised 1-inch

BigMike

Hello CitrusTheDragon,

You have asked a good question! Here are some reasons that come to mind...

Practical reasons...
-Body lift raises the cab high enough on the shift handle that your knuckles now strike your climate controls while engaging 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears.
-You are using a RockNob or another oversized shift knob that takes up so much space that your knuckle contacts your dash.
-Body lift raises the interior shift boot high enough on the shift handle that the shift handle's motion is restricted and difficult to engage or remain engaged in gear.
-Engine conversion repositions shift handle in a position that interferes with dash, or seats, or console.
-Transmission conversion repositions shift handle in a position that interferes with dash, or seats, or console.
-Custom tunnel limits shifter movement.
-Formula Toy or other Truggy frame bracing limits shifter movement.
-You want to mount your CB Radio in your dash but it will stick out too far and interfere with your shift handle.
-You've built a custom dual case triple shifter whose center handle interferes with your trans shift handle.
-Your crossmember and/or your engine mounts are badly worn and the excessive drive train movement causes your stock handle to press up against the interior shifter boot and/or cab and pop out of gear.
-You've installed bucket seats that elevate your sitting position and you'd like the shift handle to be 1-inch taller in the cab.
et cetera...

Some other reasons may be...
-You do a lot of snow, sand, and/or mud wheeling that require quick gear changes to maintain momentum.
-You drive an XtraCab with 120-inch plus or a CustomCab with a horrendous 140-inch plus wheelbase and are constantly making 3-point turns on the trail.
-You have a welded or spool rear locker and are constantly making 3-point turns on the trail.
-Your Rock Crawler is also your daily driver.
-You've got short arms.
-Your significant other drives your truck often and complains about the excessive throw of the stock shifter.
-You want to have more bling than your neighbor.
-You want to increase the resale value of your truck.
-You want to be a bad ass.
-You want to downshift like a boss.
et cetera...

Some issues this kit will remedy...
-Your stock pins and/or ball pivot is badly worn and you have a lot of shift handle slop.
-Your stock seat is badly worn and you have a lot of shift handle slop.
-Your stock socket is badly worn and you have a lot of shift handle slop.
-A previous owner bent up the handle and you'd like a better handle.
-A previous owner installed the wrong handle with the wrong bends causing interference with objects in your cab.
-Your shift handle boot is wasted or missing.
-The spring in your shift handle itself is broken and the shifter often comes loose.
-You've got a cracked shift base.
-The threads for your shift knob are stripped our or damaged.
-You are missing hardware on your current shifter base.
et cetera...

Give me a few more mins and I'll think of some more

Regards,
BigMike

Looking forward to the video too... I drive one of those 120" extra cabs and do a lot of 3pt turns on city side streets lol... but I don't mind the long semi-truck throws... it is a truck after all... the shifter is starting to get a little warn though... more stuff to spend $ on...

Okay guys,

I am busy working on the installation guide, which isn't done yet, but I do have these excellent comparison photos prepared. I'll be making a few animated GIF images instead of a video.

I also officially measured the difference in throw reduction and it is 40% which for a standard height 6cyl handle (shown below) is 1-inch reduction per throw (2-inches reduction total)!

Comparison, Stock on left, MCI on right:

I should have the installer done next week. More to come soon!

Regards,
BigMike
