One Gun ONLY.... Which One??
What gun would you have, if you could only have one?
I'm looking for a pistol in $1k range, accuracy and reliability are most important. Use for occasional targeting and sidearm protection during wilderness camping trips. Kimber's seem to feel the best to me but I think with the above two requirements i'm better off with a 9mm, no?
What would you suggest? ONE ONLY!! BEST VALUE FOR $1K!!

Folks either prefer "iron guns" (e.g. 1911 and clones) or "composite guns" (e.g. glock).
If you're into heavier variety, I recommend checking out the Sig Sauer. Depending on what size you want, the P239 or P226/P220.
I have a P220 and it's a bit bulky for frequent carry but it's accurate and reliable as ever. The P226 is basically the 9mm/.40S&W version in the same frame. P220 is single-stack .45ACP and P226 is double-stack 9mm/.40S&W.
If you want a lighter firearm, lots of folks swear by their Glocks but the Springfield XD 40 seems to be the most recent favorite.
All-in-all, build a list of ones you are interested in and then find a range that will let you rent'n'shoot

One last thing about the 1911 clones.. The proper way to carry those is "cocked and locked". This means: a round in the chamber, hammer back, safety on.
Most M1911s (especially those that are accurized for target shooting) don't have firing pin safety-block so you cannot leave the hammer down with a round in the chamber. Of course, not having a round in the chamber converts your carry gun into a weight.
I wasn't comfortable with cocked'n'locked concealed carry, so I bought the Sig P220.

If it is to be a pistola, then I prefer an HK usp .45 or a glock in 20 in 10mm. I'm not into micro-carry guns and I don't care if I 'print'. Give me full size +p tupperware power with hi cap mags. 12 +1 for the USP and 15+1 for the G20.

in alaska and other places for wildlife attacks people carry larger caliber handguns, things that way a ton and the ammo is as long as your finger.

I have both a Glock .40 and a Beretta 9mm and think either would suit you well if they're going to be used for midrange protection/ targeting. The glock packs quite a punch and I'm sure if you make contact it would take most targets down with ease. The Beretta is not as powerful as the .40, but it is much easier to shoot and a more sleek and stylish choice than the Glock. In the end it's another one of those personal choices. That's my .02

what type of camping do you do and where are you camping the most time?
Are you going to a day of for long stretches of time?
Are you the weight saving type of a person in you camping pack?
I would suggest a synthetic, or one that can take abuse such as rain, mud, and sand. You want a round that has power but not jump out of your hands if you have to use it. I agree with fuster about the 10mm it has the power and the foot per pounds needed.
I usually carry the .300 or 12ga when im hiking camping, but im hunting most of the time.

For concealed carry/personal protection, Glock 19 9mm for me. Long chat with an ex-SWAT guy. He said he would choose a 9mm over anything else, because he can shoot more accrately with it vs. a 40 or 45. Self-defense wise, he says it doesn't matter if you are shooting a 9mm or 45 when you hit them 2 in the chest and one in the head. And he said it in a way that wasn't said to be funny at all.... chilling....
But for an all-purpose gun, like if something I'd rather have if I were stranded on a desert island or home defense, etc. would be my shot gun. Only drawback would be the big, heavy shells.
For survival-only gun, my trusty lever-action Browning .22 LR.

.45 ACP or .357--you can usually find that ammo in any store that sells ammo--that is if anybody any gets any inventory
a cool gun and fun to shoot, however balistically the 'best house gun ever' part could be debated...unless it is an M2 carbine
