My first shotgun!

A couple years ago my GF invited me to go shoot trap with her .410 while we were at her parent's ranch. I was GOOD AT IT. We brought her gun home with us, and I've been shooting it atleast twice a month since. I don't even remember the last time I missed a clay.
Well a few weeks ago, my next door neighbor's house got broken into, fortunately while no one was home, and It made me think that it was time to get a 12 guage. For X-mas this year my parents got my twin bro and I both remington 870s. Mine is the "express synthetic" model, which has the integrated safety lock, and of course a black synthetic stock and forend. His is the classic wood grain(I'm getting him a synthetic camo stock/forend kit for his bday).
I can't believe how many mods there are for a shotgun! The first thing that I am going to do is buy a pistol grip and a shorter barrel for home defense because right now she stands almost 4 feet long, and a rifled barrel and scope for deer hunting. I'm pretty excited about it! No clay target is safe!

Here we are putting some miles on her little .410

hell yeah man, i was going to buy a shotgun this past summer at a pawn shop for home invasion. you'd think it would be a little excessive in a college town but i hear about them all the time. i was just going to pick up a mossberg maverick from the pawn shop, buy one pack of shells but never keep it loaded. i figured the sound of a pump would scare them off, if not i'd just have to beat their ass

I'm a Mossberg man myself but congrats anyways. I have a Mossberg 500, a Mossberg 590-M, a Mossberg 930 and a Stoeger Coach Gun, all in 12 GA. I used to teach shotgun shooting at a Boy Scout Camp, now I just blast stuff with buckshot and slugs most of the time, fun stuff.

nice, 12ga is a good shotgun size and very versatile, but you don't need a rifled barrel to shoot slugs out of a 12ga, just get a mod choke since the slug is already rifled. This spring I'm going to get a Beretta Tikka T3 .300 and in the late summer of 08, caribou and moose hunting in Alaska!

Hm, a modified choke would be easy, because the gun has the "rem-choke" feature. I can just unscrew the cylinder bore choke, and screw in the modified one!

That's kinda dumb. If you're gonna do that, just buy a tape recording of a shotgun and play that for them. If you bring out a weapon, you need to be prepared to use it.

when you pull a gun on someone you have the full intent to kill, if I had someone in my house and I didn't know them Id ask them to leave first and then kill. Thats whats done.

Well, here is how it would work for me. I keep the shotgun and shells ready. If someone was in the house or outside robbing the yota,I'd get her loaded and point it right at em. If they run, let em go. If they got defensive though I'm pretty sure I would shoot them dead.

Rifles are for home defense, a shotgun is worthless if you miss or use its limited capacity.

Good choice of guns for fun and sport though.

I would reverse that, personally. Rifles have way too much penetrative capability to use in an apartment or even neighborhood situation, and can be hard to hit a target with in the dark. A shotty is much easier to deliver a harder punch up close, with less risk of killing the neighbors with missed shots.

yeah a shotgun can give a lot of punch in a large space and works great, a rifle is for shooting a object at 100 yards, a shotgun is for a few yards and for close quarters.

its kinda the opposite they shoot way to far and really they have the same capacity unless you got like an AR or AK or one like that. Another thing if your using a shot gun for home defense dont use birdshot unless you just want to aggravate them or wound them slightly. If your shooting to injure or kill 00 buck shot is where its at and you still get a lil spread but not to much so better chance of a hit

Over penetration is a worry of the local PD, not you! If you do live in an apartment, hope no more than 9 people attack you at once and you hit all of them (thats the most capacity any shotgun has). A pistol is a much better choice if your worried about shooting your neighbors.

As for capacity, what idiot uses a hunting rifle for home defense-you want something that can hold more than 5 rounds..

Shotguns have there place, problem is you gotta think about them in a defense role. Got 5 shots in most shotguns, maybe you got a carrier and have 5 more (takes a wee bit time to reload vs a simple magazine change). Suppose 3 armed thugs break into your home, trust me you aint gonna hit every shot in the heat of the moment. So you miss 3x, and now only got 2 shots. Meanwhile these suckers have knives (distances close VERY quickly) your shotgun is worthless now, you get 2 of them great...still got #3 at ya.

If ya had a good pistol or a rifle you got at least 10 shots, but if you were smart..30 round mag.

Ya can argue all day long about overpentration, power, and shot placement. When it all boils down to it, you vs them and you need alot of firepower.. Unless of course you get lucky and they run away.. Course if they are smart (like most criminals are these days) they got body armor on and your shotgun is WORTHLESS.

You wernt to specific on what kind of rifle i was thinking you were talking about a hunting rifle which your right you would have to be an idiot to use one for self defense espeically since most people got scopes on them. But think about it buck shot is gonna spread over probably a foot u got a pretty good chance of hitting a guy especially in the heat of the moment probably better than with a rifle even a semi auto 30rd mag(tho i am getting a bushmaster this summer). but i can agree with you on the pistol to a point, i want one really bad im thinkin a springfield 1911 .45. people breaking into homes probably dont have body armor but other criminals do. And that pistol aint no good for body armor either. Buckshot to the head is good tho. I guess if i get all those guns i can take my choice and not worry about it
