in my opinion the ka-bar is the standard when it comes to knives.
I have the limited stainless and it is an amazing knife. does not hold and edge the same as your 1095 steal, but it will never chip in cold weather.
I would not carry a survival knife that has a blade less then seven inches. Limits the size wood you can baton. Another good knife is the Artac/3 knife, will total replace the need for an axe.
Also, MAN VS. WILD, is a total joke in my opinion. there are a few tricks you can learn from that, but if anyone fallows half the BS that goes on in that program, your looking to die. There are better sources out there on youtube.

That is a pretty sweet looking knife you got there.
But what about a back-up? I've usually got about 3 or 4 of everything in my rig. My recommendation still stands if you ever consider getting something a bit more practical/versatile.
I'd hate to see the mess you'd make getting a tin can open with that thing. Don't hurt yourself trying if you should ever attempt to do so.
BTW, hatchets make better wood choppers. Just sayin'...

I will have to post some pictures later of my main three knives I have.
I have more than twenty knives I bet, but the three I will post later are my main ones.
One of the Gerbers I carry daily at work.
But just saw these the other day.
Got the new Cabelas Camping catalog in the mail the other day.
If any of you watch Man verses Wild or something like that with Bear Grylls on the Discovery channel, Gerber just released some items named after him.
The fixed blade one looks kind of like my Gerber LMF II which is a great knife.
Gerber Bear Grylls Fixed-Blade Knife
Gerber Bear Grylls Scout Knife
Gerber Bear Grylls Parang
They have other Bear Gryll's stuff there too.
I kind of like the fixed blade knife as it has a fire starter with it.

I carry an old leatherman sideclip and a leatherman kick on me at all times, not for the knives but they are definitely handy at times.
My brother has a Gerber, I don't remember the model and they don't make it anymore but it's one with partially serrated blade that folds into a kinda swirly pinkish-red/black handle. If I recall correctly his knife can cut through a lot crap.
I do have a big persian hunting knife too... here's a couple pics of me being an idiot with it and not holding it right.
Before someone else calls me on it, yes, KNIVES ARE NOT TOYS! These pictures are a few years old (I used to have hair!? Apparently I had bad teeth too, dirty smoker.) and I was very drunk at the time but, that is no excuse because I could have seriously injured myself. Don't mix alcohol with knives.

Here are a few pictures of my current crop.
I have many older knives dating back 100 years or more that were my dad's and his dad's.
Also have a few Swiss Army knives put away in a drawer somewhere, but these in the picture below are the ones that come with me on a camping trip or that I carry full time.
Top left with the case above it and a sharpener, fire starter, and a GI can opener is the Tops Knives Hoffman Harpoon 01.

Below the Harpoon knife are two Gerber Coverts which have a spring that gives it assisted opening when you start to open the blade.
The smaller one is my daily carry at work, and it gets a good workout.
The bigger one is illegal to carry at work as the blade exceeds 3".
It is my main carry camping knife and knife I carry with me when I go out when not at work.
The big fixed blade is the Gerber LMF II which the Bear knife I posted in this thread looks similar to the LMF II.
Closeup of the Hoffman Harpoon knife.
I have another Gerber knife on order that will be here next Tuesday, as the price was right via Amazon.
Gerber 31-000752 Bear Grylls Survival Series, Folding Sheath Knife

Have not had a chance to use it yet.
The possibilities are there for it though.
Camping near a stream you could lash it to a pole and spear dinner
I do not have a clue how to use that GI can opener, I would rather use the homestyle on in my chuckbox for camping.
The knife sharpener is very good though, I have already used it to sharpen some of my knives with it.
You use both ends of the sharpener to first sharpen, then polish the edge.

The Gerber Bear Grylls knife showed up Tuesday.
For $23.12 the knife is a steal.
http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-31-0007...6535117&sr=8-4
I have been using it at work since Wednesday, and I like it a lot.
The serrated edge works great for cutting big thick zip ties, and the regular part of the blade is good for cutting just about anything including the plastic wrap on my microwavable lunches I bring to work
A knife guru at work took a look at it and said it was very good quality, and he liked the fact it has tightening screws up front that you can tighten if any play between the blade and the handle should ever develop.
You can also flick this knife open without using the thumb studs which is nice.
I got a very good sharpener than came with that harpoon knife, and a few strokes with both ends of the sharpener and the new knife is razor sharp.

you can never go wrong with a ka bar. I got this after I lost the leather sheath when my ka bar flew out my 4runner on the freeway http://www.survivalsheath.com/sheaths/index.htm
It has the loops to lash to MOLLE gear, which most my packs have. I keep an emergency blanket, fire starter flint, some of those wet fire tinder packages, fishing line and lures and hooks, matches and a compass and emergency whistle. it is kinda bulky to carry on my hip, but perfect for throwing in a pack or grabbing out the truck for a day hike
