Thanks, I am trying to use quality parts on it and also not go overboard with it.

sweet AR Corey, let us know if you get any optics or not! I build 'em from scratch, if you ever have any questions or problems with her, let me know...
Thanks, I am still undecided on what type is going to be best for me for seeing paper targets out past what my eyes can see.

Most that have them here drive the few hours I guess over state lines to shoot them, or use them illegally.

I would have to read up on it more too over at www.ar15.com in the sub section for WA. state.

PVC pipe, brake line, epoxy, washers/springs, steel wool/lithium grease, some simple tools and a lot of discretion = a nice 'flash suppressor' hahahaha....

i'm jealous...wish my wife would let me have guns always wished i grew up around them instead of only in video games. sure is another expensive hobby...man, I guess if I were into guns then i'd REALLY have no money to spend on my Yotas because i'd be out buying ammo all the time!

here's the closest i ever got to your sweet firearm....shooting a FOF's guns during a bachelor party weekend. those guys have got some big $ invested in their stuff (ex-blackwater dudes). Now THAT was a very fun day but my fingers still hurt remembering what it's like to load around $3k in ammo over an 8hr shooting period...

Well, if you have a private range they won't hear you shoot it, atleast.

Stopped off at Rainier Arms on the way home from work and picked up three of these in black.
Magpul 30 Round PMag - Windowed

I got two of the non windowed ones last week, I thought I might try these too.

The guy who rang me up noticed my FJ out front and we got to talking for a bit, and he said he had drove one at Cruise Moab in Utah.

He had an older Toyota truck out front, and is a member over on NW Toys, a local Toyota forum.

He asked me if I knew a moderator here named Chris that went by the membername Tofer, then I told him I was the admin here.
Small world.

Chris, if you see this, his name was Joshua, says he knows you pretty well.
He works at a great place

Chris, if you have not been in there yet, stop by if you are into shooting.
Wall to wall AR15s, it is enough to make you drool

I forgot to pick up one item I have been wanting for awhile when I stopped by the other day to get the new Pmags with the windows in them.
This is a speed loader.
Butler Creek LULA Speed Loader for AR15 / M16

No more having to push in the ammo against the spring and tear up your fingers, my fingertips are already split from the cold weather, happens everytime this year with it and working out in the rain at work.

This thing is so cool, just drop in the ammo one at a time and push the lever one way, drop in another bullet, and push the lever back again the other way.
You can load a magazine very quickly this way.

I got to talking to the guy about optics again, and I am kind of limited with the carry handle on my rifle.
He said just replace the upper, and I would have a nice flat surface with a rail built in, then I can mount any optic I want without having it stick up way high on top of the carry handle.

I did not know it was as simple as that, and next time I go there I will be getting it done.
You lose the rear sight though, so I will be getting a Magpul flip up sight that will mount right behind whatever optic I go with in the future.
Remove the optic, and you can then flip up the rear sight.
It will work with the stock front sight, so no need to remove it as this time.

I am not sure if this is the same upper he showed me, they have many on their site, and I did not write down the name of the one he showed me.
They vary in price quite a bit.

Rainier Arms Forged A4 Upper Assembly - GEN2

Also there are many rear sites they offer too that will fit the new upper with the rail built onto it, this is just the one he showed to me yesterday.

Magpul MBUS - Rear

After I get a new upper installed, it will open up to me many choices for an optic.
One I looked at was a 4x Acog which I liked.

PS, found a video (there are more) of how that speed loader works.
Guy is using it on a Magpul Pmag.

Hey Corey, that AR is coming along nicely. I like what you've done so far. 5.56 barrels usually have a faster twist rate to stabilize the heavier 5.56 NATO spec'd projectiles. 223 rounds are typically 55 grains or less, while 5.56 rounds are 62 grains +. You can run a lighter 223 through a 5.56. You can also run the 5.56 projectiles through a 223, but they will not stabilize at the 1/9 twist rate of the 223. The result will be a less reliable point of impact.

I roll my own ammunition. I seat 75 grain projectiles over 23ish grains of h335 propellant for a muzzle velocity of 2800+ fps. Side by side, you can tell the difference down range between 223 factory loads and mine.

Now that you are modifying the zombie gun Visit JP Enterprises at jprifles.com. They a nice variety of custom parts upgrades and two stage triggers for the AR platform. 'Course one should bring his wallet with him....

Thanks Fuster, I really got amped to upgrade it this year, especially when I found out that I have that store just a few miles from me.

I think I saw an ad for that JP place in one of the AR mags.
Picked up a new mag today called Black Rifle or something like that, and it has all kinds of cool stuff in it for 2011.

This is the ammo I bought a few years back, bought it from some online place.
The link here though is to the local store by me.
Mine is the same, XM193 55 grain.

Federal XM193 5.56MM - 55GR

The price is around the same, I paid around $400 for 1K rounds back then.
I take it this is a good brand to run through it?

Greenwater also.
We use to shoot at the gravel pit a few miles up FS 70, but they have a sign up no shooting last time I was up by there.

We now go to a huge area up on FS 72.
To much snow there now though.

corey...not to burst your bubble but you are loading the magazines with cartridges... the bullets are the things that come out of the business end of your rifle... cartridges contain the gunpowder charge that propels the projectile ie. "bullet", the primer which is activated by the firing pin in the rifle, and of course the shaped projectile or bullet.
However I will allow that in modern usage the word "Bullet" has come to refer to the entire item... even if it is technically in error... of course "round" is also an acceptable term for the item in question though it is only commonly used with in the armed forces.

just sayin...

Yup. Your thunder stick should eat Federal ammo all day. Depending on the twist rate stamped on your barrel 55 grain ammo might not be the optimal match. The 1/7 twist rate barrels stabilize 62 grain and up the best. 1/9 twist rates are best mated to 55 grain and lower. 1/8 twist rates are reputed to sort of bridge the middle ground stabilizing some of the lighter grain projectiles while still handling up to 77 grain well.

Regardless, unless you are match grade competitive, you may not notice the difference. Sometimes a rifle chambered for 223 that is fed 5.56x45 NATO will have quicker parts wear and chamber pressures might be a bit high for the design, but I have friends with 223 1/9 twist ARs that have fed my more potent handloads down the pipe for over a thousand rounds with no discernable excess wear. IDK, maybe it's all hoakum, but I just do what the manual tells me

I do wish we could go shooting sometime. I'd like to try yours while you shoot mine...

quick question is there anyone in here that is any where near south bay area (san jose, morgan hill, gilroy, hollister) that has a decent place to shoot for distance 200+ yards? i have been told that my 17hmr will reach out farther but the onlly time i was at therange with more than 100 i also had a 20-30 mph cross wind. and with a 17grain projectile well shooting at more than 30 was a waste of ammo. any way just wondering. and again yall got some awsome weapons, makes me wish i had more $$ and did not live in cali
