1988 4Runner, mechanic wanted for diesel conversion SE/southern US
Hi everyone. This is my first post. I just bought a 1988 4Runner with a 3.0l v6 and a 5 speed transmission. When I bought it, it ran very well. I even had a mechanic look it over, and he gave me the green light. No more than 5 days later, I started having problems. I found out that it has a head gasket leak, and since the engine has 200k on it, it's time for a new or rebuilt engine. I definitely don't want another 3.0l gas engine. I really want a diesel for fuel effeciency and alternative fuel choices.
I have done a lot a research on many different forums. I know there are several options, but I've decided that the Cummins b3.3 makes the most since, in terms of reliability and effeciency. I've already called Proffitt's Cruisers, but they don't do swaps in 4runners. Diesel Toys will do it, but they are booked 10-12 months out. I really need to get this thing running again soon.
Can anyone recommend an honest and reputable shop that isn't scared to take on a conversion like this (and without trying to rape me...)? I live in Arkansas, so I'm trying to find someone in the AR, TX, TN, OK, MO, MS area, but if I have to, I will haul this thing across the country to get what I want. I've already found a qsb3.3t for around $4200, brand new. Although maybe the installation would be easier for the mechanical version.
Also, if anyone feels like recommending another diesel swap that may be a better value for my money, I'm open to other suggestions. Although I don't think the om617 can compete on effeciency, or even resale value, compared to a new b3.3.
Thanks in advance for the replies.
