ambitious1's 1991 FJ80 Build up!
Bought a 1991 the other day....
Paid $2400, got a killer deal! It's not perfect, but its a perfect platform for what I want to build. I'm thinking 2"-3" lift, 33's, maybe a decent set of bumpers, and lose the running boards. Has 132,000 miles on it, I'll fill in more details as I go on, nuff chit-chat.... On to some pics!!!!

Really?? I guess then I will! I'm gonna have to do more research on what gears it has and that kinda stuff. I don't wanna stress the trans too much with running significantly oversized rubber....
Also, I've been looing at the 3/2 lift offered by man-a-fre, 3" front, 2" rear, level when unloaded... I don't plan on any safaris, my cargo will mostly be human..... Occasional trips to the beach, mountain and light offroading.... Just wanna be realistic....

the trannies on these are bullet proof. with bigger tires you'll only have to worry about gearing really. the FJ80 axles are burly and can handle pretty much anything you throw at them... 9.5 diffs might as well be 1 tons.

Good to know... I think I'm gonna pull the trigger and order the lift this afternoon. Saturday I intend to do a rocker adjustment and valve cover gasket. I think I'll do a tranny flush just on general principal...

Re-painted the wiper arms. Removed the running boards. Bought some black 16x10 fake beadlocks off CL for $240. Bolted the seats down secuely (there was an issue with that). Tomorrow I will adjust the valves and set the timing. Then I think it will be back to running tip-top, and I can start driving it and sell my 4runner.
Really looking forward to the lift showing up, so I can install it and get some tires under it too!!!!!

Not yet. I've got a set of 33" BFG MT's on my '83, after its lifted I'm gonna throw those on there to check fitment/driveability. If it looks like 35's will fit comfortably, and it doesn't drive too doggy with the 33's, I MAY put 35's on there. I'm already leaning towards the 33's though..... Also, I'd like to see how much real lift i get. Some reading I've done leads me to believe the original springs are likely worn out some, and I'm actually sitting lower than stock. So, a 3" lift may yield me more. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it...... Either way, on 16x10's with a 4.25" backspacing it's gonna have a way more aggressive stance.

Adjusted the valves today, they were out of spec. The intake valves really weren't too bad. the exhaust valves were all too tight. The book calls for .014, they were all more like .007-.008. My guess is that whoever adjusted them last time went ahead and just set them all to .008, which is what the intake valves were supposed to be. Not she's running fantastic.
Front springs are on backorder til 6/5, which is no biggie, it'll all happen in due time........

Here's a pic of it after I pulled the running boards off, and of the 16" wheels I bought, and of the 31's that are on my 4runner. I'm thinking about throwin the 31's on there for the interum until I get the lift on and buy tires for the 16x10's.....

UPDATE.... Dubbed the "Storm Trooper" by my buddy, I think it's gonna stick. I've NEVER named a vehicle before (because I think it's cheesy) but this one has a name folks! This thing is gonna look b@da$$ with some lift and 35's on those 10" wheels.

I actually bought from a hispanic dude in Vancouver. I had a lil trouble getting the title transferred at first and through some research I learned that it actually was from the Tillamook area. Sold at a used car lot, then traded back into the same lot, then wholesale auctioned from that lot to a private auction lot, and then auctioned again to the dude I got it from. And the title was never actually transferred to any legal owners through all of that so I had a nice lil paper trail to deal with......

Only thing new here is the wheels/tires. And I installed all new stereo. I mounted some 16x10 wheels with 315/75 AT's. Drives great. HARD on fuel. So hard in fact I actually took it off insurance and it is parked for the time being. I will get back to it after my 83' is done being built......
