You push down on the wiring harness plug, not on the 02 side. It should slide right out. I would not try to pry it open, etc with a screwdriver, I would think you will end up with a broken harness plug doing that.
I swaped out my T100's o2 this weekend, cleared the CE light. Finally! Just hoping that my mpg goes up like it did with my 4runner. (~3 mpg)

A fine family does make a pretty picture.

I remember the o2 connector being a bear to get apart though there was nothing particularly special about it. Couldn't get a picture for you, skid's back on. Look at your new sensor plug, that should give you an idea of where the catches are, though I think there was only the one you already found.

Thanks. The wiring harness is now no longer one piece. It took wd 40, a few hours of soaking, and a lot of cursing. I didn't take the sensor out. I don't have any codes related to the o2 sensor, just trying to figure out why I'm getting 12mpg.

So the FSM says there should be 5-7 ohms resistance on the o2 sensor. I've got 13 ohms! I guess that's a good indication I need a new one. The FSM says thats at 68* Fahrenheit and it 70* but I don't think 2 degrees matter that much. Hopefully this will help. I post up results.

Thanks Habanero. They do make it a pretty picture. That's why I'm not in it.

I know I know. But then we gotta haul the tripod and set a timer... no excuse.

Funny you live in not California and have a California exhaust and I live in California and don't have a California exhaust. $55 on amazon.

Also I don't know if its common knowledge but you can get denso part numbers here

I found it cheaper searching for it that way.

So I got the new o2 sensor today. The resistance on the old one was 13 ohms.

Resistance on the new one: 12.7.

Why? Did I get the info from the fsm wrong?

Well I put it in anyways. Here's a comparison

I don't really know if the old one was bad based on the little that I know but I figure the old one has been in there long enough. I think it's recommended to change them every 75K and I've got way more than that. I don't know if it's origional or not but hey, why not.

So I took it for a test drive and noticed not much. I did find something though. I played around some more with torque app for my android and thought I'd try to get as much info regarding o2 sensors as possible. I guess I should have done a before and after but I didn't think of it soon enough before and I didn't want to take it out and get the exhaust pipe hot.

So here's what I found. Fuel trim bank 1 sensor 1 fluctuated plus or minus 3%. Bank 1 sensor 2 was at 99% constantly. I had no idea what fuel trim was so I did a little bit of research and I guess that I'm running way too rich. I know there are a lot of things that can cause that. My first question is what does sensor 2 cover? Is it one half of the cylinders, or would it be the rear o2 sensor (which does nothing to air/fuel), or something else? Searching hasn't yielded much.

I'm not going to do anything tonight but I thought I'd share and maybe get some ideas. Thanks everybody for all the help. I really appreciate it.

Well disregard that last. Bank 2 doesn't have any trim. I guess some readers default tp maximum value.

I wish I could be of any help to you on this one buddy but its way out of my knowledge bank. Heck it took me almost a year to figure out my spark plugs were shot lol. Good luck with getting it sorted out I will be following along.

Truth be told I don't know how much there is to be sorted out. It runs well enough, but just doesn't get comparable mileage to what others get. With a 2.5" lift and 265/75's I'm getting about 12.

My next step I think is going to check for a vacuum leak and then do a compression check for the heck of it. I'll keep everyone updated.

Well the propane test didn't make any vacuum leaks obvious.

I did get to go out wheeling in the desert for a good 7 hour trip last saturday. I went with a buddy and his little brother. My buddy has a 95 2 door cherokee (I've finally convinced him to get rid of it and get a 4runner, we'll see how long it takes), and his brother has a 95 Bronco.

We mainly went exploring out in Anza Borrego state park and didn't find anything difficult but it was fun. Mainly just dirt roads and some parts with really soft sand. We went to the devil's drop off, the name is misleading, it overlooked some small canyons. It was pretty cool but I don't know if it's comparable to the devil. We also went for several miles along the 1847 stagecoach road, and up a few small canyons. Overall a good day.

I think the new o2 sensor helped a little. I got 14mpg on a 140 mile trip with 90 miles in the dirt. We'll see how it holds up.

Question for anyone: my door tag says that the tires from the factory were 225/75/15's. Is that the base I should use to calculate the different mileage (i.e. my tires are 12% bigger than the 225's so do I multiply my mileage by 1.12?)

I don't know if the odometers are all geared the same, I know other 4runners had 265/70/16's from the factory.

Sounds like some fun hanging out and seeing cool things.

My 96's sticker says 265/70r16 and the 99's says 225/75/15. I've got 2.10s and the 99 has 2.30s.
The 96 with 265/70r16 was always a mile or two an hour under the speedometer reading when I went past those 'your speed' radar things. Those are useful if you come across one or we have also used our Garmin handheld GPS for speed when the speedo broke on the VW and to double check the speed on my 96.
And that's some more info to add to the confusion.

Hopefully it's not your gear ration in the diffs. That would be crazy. 4.10s and 4.30s maybe?

I don't know enough about odometers to know if they are calibrated or geared differently in different 4runners.

The garmin idea is a good one though. My sister in law has one.

The "your speed is" sign made me laugh. It reminded me of the episode of the office where they all go outside and run by it to see who is faster. Maybe I'll cruise around and look for one, drive by it in the rig, then run by it to see how fast I am.

*facepalm*
(I did mention confusion...)
96- 4.10
99- 4.30
That's crazy enough, thank you very much!

Today my little helper and I finally put in the tweeters that I got for Christmas. He fell asleep about half way through though. The stereo sounds a little better. I'm not a huge audiophile so I can't comment on the finer points of them but my sister got them for me and someone took all the speakers out before I got it and I've replaced the other ones so I figures what the heck.

I've never checked to see what gears are in it but my brother had a speedometer app on his iphone and surprisingly it said my speedometer was dead on at 70mph. So I guess I don't get to do any favorable estimating on fuel consumption.

I think I finally got my p0301 code figured out. I ran a can of seafoam through it while I was on a 400 mile trip two weeks ago and since then no codes at all. That really makes me want to pull out my injectors and send them to witchdoctor. Hope everyone's well.

Bummer about the mpg being what it says but it's nice to have a dead-on odo anyway.

There's a recent thread floating around here somewhere that someone is pulling his fuel injectors to send to Witchdoctor. He posted up a link to a good write-up on getting to them and getting the pieces all back together again.

post 19 has the link.

Thanks Hab. The problem with sending them off is the down time. Maybe in a month or two when I'm off for summer and no longer going to school 104mi away.

It runs well enough. Just more stuff to tinker with. It helps that my wife takes the 4runner to work (1.5 mile round trip) and I take her prius to San Diego, so the rig doesn't get many miles put on during a normal week. Just when we go play.

Well there hasn't been anything done here for quite a while. I guess that's a good thing and a bad thing. No major problems but no fun either. No camping and it way too hot to wheel out in the desert right now. Finally got around to putting in a new fuel filter. Good excuse to go buy some flare nut wrenches. Easy job so no pics.

I also gave the 4runner a bath. One of the things that I liked about the paint job when I bought it was how new and clean it looked. It's still ok but not very good quality. For example if a bird craps on it and I don't wash it off in a day or so it starts to eat away at the paint. Here is an example:

Size: 27.8 KB

The spot on the left was probably 2 or 3 days. The spot on the right was a week or two. It's not always easy to catch them on the roof. I don't want to put a lot of money into this paint job, I'd rather use it for other stuff or a different paint job, but I got an idea. My wife has some nail polish that was pretty close:

So I thought what the heck I'll try it out. It's just the roof and it'll keep bare metal covered.

So what do you guys think? At this point I think it's better than nothing. I also thought about going to a body shop and seeing if they could mix me a little bit of paint. I don't know. Maybe I'll see how the nail polish holds up and use it for the roof.

Last update. Anyone want to guess why this picture really bugs me?

Hmmm, couldn't be the boot so it must be the rounded bolts.

4 Lower ball joint bolts 59 ft lb and loctite
ball joint bolt 105 ft lb
Pick up a set of bolts too, when/if you get a ball joint.
