Hey Jason. We only did a 3500 miles of driving this go-round (and caught up on the Toyota Trucks and Trails podcast, which were awesome). I like to drive but I don't know how you do it, the way some of us goofballs drive around big rigs. Cadillac Ranch was more interesting than I thought it'd be, a fun half hour. Driving from St. Louis to Santa Fe, that was 1 long and interesting day. We took 3 days with sights to see and things to do on the way back home from Albuquerque. You have my respect, sir.
Hey Hab, I'm considering the heated mirror upgrade that you have detailed on pages 132-133 here. Couple questions, if I may:
- Despite my 99 being a base model the wiring harness has the 6-pin connector with 5 wires going into it, but only three out to the mirror itself. Does this tell me that though my mirrors are non-heated the truck is actually wired for heated mirrors?
- Can you use "late" style guts (00-02) in an "early" mirror housing (96-99)? I assume no...

i wouldn't give it a 2nd thought. sometimes you can give the same set of instructions to 5 different people and have 5 different outcomes.

Thanks guys, I really needed that! Also the Haynes crack made me laugh and the 5/5 comment is way true. Heck, you can give me a set of instructions 5 times and get 5 different outcomes.
Still I really hope this gets straightened out and I do feel bad for the person.

Thanks for that! I found a donor on eBay and I'll see how it all turns out. Your writeup about it gave me the inspiration and showed it was possible! And if I happen to screw it up it's my own dang fault

Oh thank you for that! Really it's just like a puzzle how it fits together and it's not that hard to do which I'm sure you've figured out already. Hardest thing was those screws that hold the mirror to its base
which my knight in shining wedding band drilled out the ones that stripped. I did replace them with regular head bolts- hex or allen, I forget!
and be careful to try not to strip the screws that hold the mirror bracket to the case and the one that holds the mirror in place.
It'd be really cool if you managed to get a color match and had a plug n play, but not having to repin, that would be pretty awesome too.
An update for the problematic mod. I posted a picture in the person's uh-oh thread showing where I think things went wrong and sure enough, that does appear to be the problem. I did warn about them in my write-up because they are tiny tiny super-tiny copper wires. They're going to attempt a repair which, cross fingers, A) works and B) solves the problem.
All that said, these wires are super tiny. It would not take much for them to break at all. Maybe a hummingbird flew by. Or somebody the next town over sneezed. Maybe Mars aligned with Jupiter. I am going to edit the write-up to reflect this (and if the repair is a success then that too) and warn more heavily abut the gossamer bits that can wreck a person's day.
I still feel a little bad that the plan did not come together but you all did make me a little less cringy. Really wished all had gone swimmingly, of course.
This is the speedo out of an early 3rd gen. There are 4 teensy copper wires soldered to tiny posts.
A trip odo sits over the top of this. It's replaceable- I've replaced mine with great luck- but yeah, stinky tiny wires. After so many years of vibration I'm sure anything could cause them to jump ship and break.

You must've hit 40....or 70, hopefully neither around rush hour. People can be really autonomous when they get behind the wheel in MO. Would have been cool to cross paths, I'm less than a dozen miles from 40.
All is well here, trying to find a chance between raindrops to do the timing belt job on the 96. Hope the maiden voyage went well for you too.
I normally come across 40, but I chose to run 70 this time only because it was the middle of the afternoon and I hadn't been across the "New" bridge since it was built.

Timing belt, water pump, thermostat......and apparently exhaust leak?
For anyone who cares to know I'm using the good old faithful 4x4 wire write-up though this being the 3rd time I could almost do it in my sleep. Okay, maybe not. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timing_belt/
I have the timing belt tensioner tool, that eliminates a bunch of steps. It's a Schley SCH97300. Very useful if you're not replacing the hydraulic tensioner.
Between grocery shopping, food making, storms, kid stuff and what nots I got it torn down. Geez, do I hate that dumb 217ft lb crank bolt. Got it, though. It got dark outside and I had to adult (do responsibility stuff) so that's it for tonight.
Next up: TDC and more!
While I was pulling my skid (remind me to get a new bolt to replace the one with the mangled head) I noticed what looks to be a large exhaust leak. Once I get the current project done I'll do more investigating. If I had to guess I'd say seriously failed exhaust gasket after the cat....we'll see.
Oh, also need to remember to do gear fluids since the skids are off. diff, trans, tranny.
