Yakima Rack on 2nd Gen

Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't been on here in a while, but dial-up just sucks when trying to surf the forum. So, once I get back up to school on our network I will be checking in a lot more frequently.

Anyway, I am about to put a set of Yakima towers and cross-bars on my rig, and was just wondering if anyone had a picture of what the rack would look like. I know that the bars are going to be centered over my doors, but I would just like to see what someone's looks like before I throw mine up there. If possible, I would like to see one without a basket or anything like that attached on top (just the control towers and cross-bars).

Thanks so much fellas - I really appreciate it. Take care-

CTB

Hi Cody, many many pix here.

And a few close-ups here.

Here's one that shows how they are centered over the doors.

And yes, my Load Warrior is in about every pic, it's been on there shortly after I put the towers & bars on.

Hey Corey,

Thanks for the pics. Unfortunately, when we tried to put my rack on today, we ran into a couple of problems. Apparently the towers that were given to me were old enough to be Y-Towers, not Q-Towers. Consequently, the Q-Clips that I bought did not fit (of course), and so I am basically at ground zero. All that I have that will carry over to the newer Q-Towers are the actual crossbars. So, I guess the factory rack will remain on there for a little while longer.

Now, to figure out how to attach my canoe to the factory rack.....

Thanks again Corey. I can't wait to be up at school and away from this dial-up access. I feel like I'm missing so much by not checking on the board every day. Don't leave me too far behind!!!!

Take care,

Cody

anybody know how much it would cost for a yakima rack where the front would be the Q towers that go on the doors and the back go in the factory runners? with the bars and everything? if anybody has any sort of idea that would be great.
Thanks

KEVIN

Cody, not even broadband will help
I have cable, and when I get home at night, there are 110 new posts most of the time since I left for work.

We are averaging about 300 posts a day here, possibly more.
When it shows me 110 new posts, that doesn't take into account the other many replies within the post.
We could very well be up over 500 replies a day here :pat:

We are a very busy board indeed.

Good luck in rounding up the parts.
By the way, the crossbars I am using have been on all 3 of my Toys.
I got them in '88.
Tough buggers.

just so happens i got the Yak price list right here on my desk...set of 2 Q towers is $70...set of 2 control towers for the factory rack is $45...all lengths of bars...48", 58", 66", etc are about $45...bringing you to a total of $160...add on some locks to protect your investment...$40 for set of 4...and a 38"wind fairing for $50 and you could spend about $250 for a complete setup...you got an REI near you ?...become a member for $15 and at the end of the year they send you a check for 10% of everything you bought...not a bad deal if you need a rack and some camping gear all at the same time...hope this helps...

one word: ebay.

you know these rack systems hold up very well so buying one used is not a big deal. ive had mine since 1990 and it still works like a charm.

if you got an extra 2-5 hours a week heres another idea...go talk to a manager at REI...let him know how well you know the area and how much you camp and wheel and see if he will put you on the schedule one night a week for a few hours...dont get me wrong you dont make ANY money doing this...but the employee discount is ridiculous...on anything Yakima youll get 50% off !! if it says REI on it youll usually get more like 60-70% off...at the REI here most of the guys only work about 10 hours a month...strictly for the discount man...

No, the REI discount doesn't work that way.
If you are an REI employee, you get 30% off of any name brand item.
If it's an REI brand label such as their tents, clothes, sleeping bags, ect, an employee gets 50% off.

perhaps ive been misinformed...your spin on it sounds a bit more reasonable...regardless...could be worth the time if you end up spending hard earned $$ there anyway

Oh yeah, especaily if an employee wants to get a $300 Garmin Vista GPS, they can get it for practicaly $200.
Not a bad deal at all.
