Would you rather have a sunroof or NO sunroof?

Who has had problems with their sunroofs / moonroofs?

From reading old threads, it looks like there are quite a few people who have had water leaks stemming from issues with their sunroofs... ?

Trying to decide if I should look for one with or without a sunroof.

Thanks!

sunroof, yes

most cars leak, it's cuz of the water drains that get clogged, i haven't had a issue with any car with sunroofs so far.

No leaks no problems, i always get w/ one cause its really nice to occasionally look up when your going through the bush or nice trail...makes it feel bigger inside too!

I say look for one w/ it but its not like you can't live w/out one.

I love mine. The only time I ever have water come thru is when I'm in the car wash (and that's only a drop or two). It is great when you want a little ventilation w/o the hurricane force winds and sounds. Plus it looks sweet.

I had to have one when I starting looking. I really wanted a 5spd to but was willing to settle for an auto. I almost did when a miracle happened and I found my 96 with a 5spd and moonroof

i love mine open the sunroof and roll the back glass down and you can pull a good breeze w/o all the noise like your side windows make. the only time mine let water in it was open. 10years old and no leaks

Thanks for the links, RobD. I am looking to have one installed in an 87 4 Runner we are about to purchase.

EDIT: Oh I had 1 second gen and 1 3rd gen with sunroofs / moonroofs - and they were leak free, heavily tinted from the factory, and very much an asset to the vehicle.

I'm of two minds on the issue on the one hand I don't want a sunroof because they can leak and also weaken the roof structure which could increase the chances of severe injury in an accident or roll-over and on the other hand it is nice to be able to open up the roof on a sunny day and they do help cool the car much faster.
I would say look for a good vehicle first if it has one great if not no worries.

I have one on my truck and i love it. It was definitely a must when I bought mine. Its more open, cools down quickly and gives a cool few at night.

The only option I wish I had in my 91 truck...I've had it on 2 other cars and love consistently venting the interior without adding noise. The only problem I ever had was when I had the sunroof replaced under warranty and they tore the drain tubes and the floor filled up with water at the first rain. Which was like 6 months later since I'm in CA...

The only time I had rain in my car wasn't the sunroof it was b/c I accidentally busted out my small sliding window in my truck and it rained the night lol.

Generally, the only ones that leak are aftermarket sunroofs. The reason being, is they don't have the "drip tray" that factory ones have. That is why I will NEVER install an aftermarket sunroof in my truck. Besides that, have you ever tried to find parts for that aftermarket stuff? Seems like two years after you buy one NO ONE has parts available for the kit anymore.

If a factory one EVER leaks, its caused by one or both of two things:
1. Pressure ie Carwashes or Hoses/Pressure washers forcing the water in
2. Clogged drain tubes.
When I had my 2000, I constantly drove around in the rain with it tipped open, with nary a single leak ever. You can't do that with aftermarket junk, it will leak all over the bloody place.

Aviator: Sunroofs do not necessarily weaken the structure of the roof. Aftermarket sunroofs, yes they make the roof very weak. But factory sunroofs in cars with pop-up non electric roofs actually make them stronger! They add a ton of bracing and instead of just being a flat panel, it acts similar to an "I" beam, to allow less flex.

Kind of like how convertibles are heavier than regular cars.

Love my sunroof. Draw backs are added weight and worrying if it will ever break. I love how much bigger it seems inside and how even it really lights up the inside of the cabin.

I rarley use mine. Ilike the dark privacy behind tint and the cover closed to the sun roof. I like the added feature tho its there if i want to use it.
