Stopped by to pick up an oil filter and I remembered that someone in here mentioned that Fram had some paper or something in it that deteriorated so I got a Wix. Just checked out their site and they seem like a great filter. Anyone use these or have +/- comments on them?

I read quite a write-up about oil filters about a month ago. Now I have a few Fram filters to give away. Yes, does have to do with metal vs cardboard end caps/failures.

WIX is about as good as the come, but they are spendy little puppies. NAPA (Silver and Gold) are very good. Think Ill be going with them from now on. NAPA stores are also on evey street corner.

I believe I was once told that Wix makes filters for Napa and a few other parts stores...I use Napa Gold.

The NAPA gold is/used to be a WIX.

I too have heard that WIX are top notch.

Stick with what it came with in the first place... a Toyota filter. Do the research here as well as other boards and you'll see what I mean.

go to bobistheoilguy.com forums and find out for yourself what is the best spin on. i think it will be something like the wix/napa gold filters

also go to the bypass filters section to get some knowledge of that type of filtration

I'm using NAPA Gold right now. Mobil 1 are great too, but lots of $$$$$$. Wix and Toyota are good too.

Hey Ted had anymore problems with your transfer case leaking?

I've been using an oversized Wix filter with Mobil 1 Synth. oil for just about a year now on my '01 Runner. No problems to report. (Other than its a bit of a bean to get the on/off since its a little longer than the OEM.) I'm sure the standard size Wix will perform great as well. I've used Wix on other rides for years and have never been disappointed...

I'd also have to agree with Churnd, stick with the OEM oil filters, but make sure they are made in Japan and not the US. The Japanese ones seem to be better than the ones made in the US. .CCTK2, I'll see if I can get you that link about the filter comparisons.

I have always used Carquest Gold, made by WIX. More expensive, but you get what you pay for.

WIX makes Carquest and Napa filters, they are high quality and better than many OEM filters.

The cut open Toyota filters don't look like anything special to me, and have the cheap tabs rather than a coiled spring. Still beats the cheapos though.

My make shift sylicone plug worked and I have had no problems since. It normally has a similar sealant type plug in it from the factory to prevent the transfer case from blowing apart. It turns out to be somewhat a release valve. So when it starts to leak, just plug it with a high heat caulk and it will work the same as the original.

I'd stick with Toyota filters for value and Amsoil for superior performance.

i was told to make sure that my oil filters have a "check valve"?? can anyone fill me in on what this does and what company has this? it is my understanding that amsoil has a oil filter with a checkvalve, but is there something i can pick up at a local shop that has this too?

Also known as a pressure relief valve, bypass valve.......
IN THE EVENT the filter element becomes glogged to the point that oil cant flow through, the oil will remain in circulation but not though the element. Dont want the oil to blow the filter can now do we....:pat:

The "bypass" valve allows unfiltered oil to flow in the event of a clogged filter. The theory here is that unfiltered oil is better than NO oil.

The "check" valve keeps the oil in the filter from draining back down into the engine at shut-off. The idea here is to have some juice available in the upper end at start-up.

Both Wix and the dealer filter are excellent. You may have noticed that the part numbers for Wix and NAPA are the same(the numeric portion anyway). That's not a coincidence.

I always use the dealer filter while under warranty. After that, I'll use Wix if I'm not able to get to the dealer when it comes time to do the oil change.
