Winch / brush guard question
I've found this on e-bay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEBI%3AIT
Question - the Toyota winch is rated at 3300 lbs - how effective would that
be on my 1990 Toyota 4 runner ? Pretty good price but the winch is
questionably a little small. What do you guy's think ?

it would work great for pulling small trees off the road but i wouldn't try to use it to pull your truck up or out of anything.
i think there's a huge article on pirate that tells about how much pulling force you need from a winch in various conditions....might want to check that out.

if you already knew, why did you ask?
"Question - the Toyota winch is rated at 3300 lbs - how effective would that

i told you exactly what you asked for, what i thought about the 3300lb winch and how effective i thought it would be on your '90 4runner.
now you're wondering about the platform....
IMO, if you are planning on just using the platform and not then winch then i think you could get a better deal on just a platform of some sort. Also, if the platform was designed to be used with a 3300lb winch then do you really want to run the risk of using an 8000lb winch on there?
if you do get it and don't want the winch, i'd give ya $65 shipped for it.

Doc, stay away from that. The winch isn't near enough and the mount would give a terrible approach angle-you'd be banging it on everything. Hold out for a good bumper or even a Warn brushguard/winch mount like Ernie had on his Tacoma (Red Tacoma at the ride this summer at Tellico).

I'll just spend the money on a locker.

happy thanksgiving to you too.
i love my locker. i've seen a few threads where people are undecided on which to buy first, locker or winch. it's usually 50/50 split.
lockers will get you into situations where you need a winch (not yet for me) and people with winches say they hardly ever use them

Ditto that-Doc I have never used my winch at Tellico or at all on the 4Runner. Now, the one on my Z-71 gets a regular workout-but there is nothing but mud on logging jobs in south Alabama.

We used your winch at Tellico to move that large rock on the little trail - remember ?
Lock the front or the rear first ? I've thought about the Detroit lock rite
locker but we occasionally get snow here and I hear that a locker and snow and ice do not mix. I really want a selectable locker - either electric
or with the OBA. Every time it snows - I want to drive up on the mountain going to Cherokee NC - 441 through New Found Gap.
I'll be saving my money for the locker deal.

I moved that rock with a strap hooked to the bumper, winch is still a virgin.

i'd say rear locker first
a locker and snow are fine but you have to realize gravity will take over if given the chance.
for example, if you're off camber on snow/ice and you lock the front and rear, when all wheels start spinning the truck is just going to slide right down the mountain.
on flat ground there is no problem using the locker, i use it all the time while wheeling in the snow
