Will It Be Too Loud? Exhaust For 1997 4 Runner

of course this is up to the owner, will it be too loud

I have a 1997 3.4 4 runner

it will need an exhaust soon, going to my friends shop and bending up 2.5 mandrel tubing from the cat to the muffler which will be an oval shape dynomax super turbo that measures 14 inches long...the body size,,,the overall size is 18 inches by measuring the inlet and outlet spouts

I will mount it in the factory location

I plan on putting on a 3 inch mandrel tail pipe, and have it exit near the receiver/rear bumper, but will have a turn down,,,,to keep the sound down

what you you guys think? way too loud? I dont want it sounding like a honda with a 4 inch exhaust

what are you guys running for exhaust systems?

thanks, tim

Loud is subjective, like you mentioned. I run a glasspack in place of the stock muffler. I get compliments/questions all the time. People always ask "what do you have in there?" And they are amazed when I respond "a $52 exhaust, including install."

My suggestion would be to go to Corey's exhaust page and listen to all the exhaust
s. Look up "Corey" in the members section and check it out. Mine is on there as well.

90% of exhaust enthusiasts out there would think mine is too loud, I am sure of that. I just love it.

2.5 to the muffler then 3" out seems liek too much flow... there needs to be some backpressure... 2.25" mandrel with 2.5" out is probably a better idea

I have a custom setup on my truck with a Vortex muffler.

I have videos and .wav files on my website.

unless you dont care about losing power, dont go with 3 inch pipe, like said before, you WILL lose backpressure and wont gain any power, you will most likely lose power.

I've got a flowmaster 40 series on my 4runner with 2.5 inch pipe and its pretty loud. I wouldnt want it any louder.

Echoing all the above... 2.5 & 3" is WAY too much pipe for this engine. 2.25" is fine, 2.5" is okay if you're running a supercharger & headers.

At the recommendation of a local shop, I tried a 3" tail pipe... that lasted less than 2 weeks. It _sucked_ - all the power fell out of the engine. They replaced it with a 2.5" and life is much better.

You're gonna only see minimal power gains by hollowing out the cat or going with anything over 2.25" with an NA 4Runner engine and in some cases you'll gain the power in an high RPM range you normally don't see;you need backpressure to get our heavy trucks moving which is the torque.
Too little backpressure will result in moving the torque up the powerband too which will hurt acceleration.

An exhaust on our engines that aren't forced induction seems to be more for sound than performance and I can't wait to do mine.
