And who said the 3.0 is slow.

I was coming home from Wal-Mart tongiht, and was out on the interstate. Wasn't paying attention to the speed and go going 87 and of course, there was a cop there. He pulled me over and gave me a ticket for doing 87 in a 65. That sucks, but I understand. He then writes me a written warning for "Cutting people off when i was pulling over." He should be happy I even pulled over. anyhow, a poor college student is now 110 dollar light in the pocket. I am just surprised that an auto and a 3.slow could go that fast. Anyone else have a good speeding story?

I was running I-40 from Little Rock to Memphis in my brother's 95. I had it on the floor full out running about 91 - 92 MPH. That's all she had. Worst part was, I still couldn't shake that asshole trucker that was riding my back bumper. Never wanted a bottle of nitrous worse in my whole life. Heck, my old 91 explorer would even hit 100. And I know my 22RE in my stock 87 will run 85 right now.

i've noticed that about other states . on my way to colorado, truckers kept tailgating people. asshole indeed. i'm glad in cali those big rigs have to 55. the way it should be.

no exciting speeding ticket stories here. my one was for going 45 in a 25. it's weird, it was the one time i was really really speeding, trying to see how fast i could get to my girlfriend's house at the time. good thing i got to slow down a little before i saw him.

I got my truck up to 105mph one time blowing mulch out the back after some yard work, my friend was freakin out though so I had to lay off the gas. Later on I'm almost positive I read somewhere that my 31x10.5 BFG long trails are only rated to 100mph... hmm anyone else have any thoughts on those type of tires and 100+ mph speeds?

105 in a 3.4 isn't all that impressive in a 22re or 3.0, that's some sorta record. What were you driving?

And as far as speed rating goes... your tire's not going to fly apart at 101 if it's rated at 100. I'm sure you could run 120 on a 100mph tire. The tire companies have to compensate for all the stresses that go along with the tire, including braking, poor aligment, cornering, and accelerating all of which put added stress on a tire at any speed. However, no more extremes than you would be able to put on the tires at 100 in your truck without losing control, I would not worry too much about speed ratings, as I'm sure at 105 you didn't have much more left. Now if you were in a race car doing lapping on a 100mph tire at speeds of 150 pulling .8+ g's around a track and heating them up significantly, then you might think about getting a higher speed rated tire.

I got pulled over after being 'paced' at 95 mph.....yeah right!!

I had just flown in from the West Coast, had spent 12 hours in airports and airplanes and I was tired. I was the only one on the road except for 2 cars that appeared way back in my rear view mirror, driving side-by-side, and were approaching at a very high rate of speed. I thought they were racing and I moved to the right lane to let them pass. They didn't but lined up behind me and flicked on the blues. I pulled over and found that one was an un-marked and the other was a DUI car. It was around Christmas and they were trolling for drunks coming home from Christmas parties. When they found I wasn't drunk, the DUI car left and the un-marked wrote me up for going 95 mph. I wasn't happy. First, I wasn't going that fast (maybe 75 in a 55) and second I knew that my truck could go that fast but it would have been at the hairy limit and I was too tired to be driving like that. And finally, how did they pace me when they were so far back.....the physics don't add up. If I was going 95, they would have to been going over 200 mph to have caught up with me in the 2-3 miles that they said that they paced then chased.

Well.....long story short, I spent a year on probation and had to take driving school and was waived the cost of the ticket. And it was an injustice....I had to go through all that pain/suffering and hadn't been going that fast. So, in order to make things right, the incident challenged me to see if my truck could go that fast....so I went out one day and ran it up to that speed and found that yes, it could go that fast but it wasn't comfortable. If I had never got the ticket, I never would have had my truck up to that speed. That is what my Porsche 911 is for.....

Several years ago I was driving through south-central Montana - rolling plains as far as you can see. Back then, the speed limit was whatever the cop thought it should be; if there was no cop around, then it was whatever you thought it should be. Anyway, I was able to top 100 on the long, gradual downhill stretches, but would fall to 60 or so on the long, gradual uphill stretches. 100mph in a 1st gen is a little scary. Really scary when a big rig blows past you like you're standing still.

They have a completely different method of pacing than you are thinking of. They pick an object that they see you lined up with and start a timer. They turn around and hit a trip odometer when they line up with that same object. When they catch up to you they stop both the timer and the trip odometer. Simple mathmatical calculations will give your average speed over the set distance. This is how most cops will get you without using a radar. It's much more effective in areas where people use radar detectors. The way to get around this..... since it is an "average" speed, as soon as you think you've been pegged, slow your vehicle WAY below the speed limit. You need to slow to a speed that will average your high speed to the speed limit. Even if they know you were speeding, they have no way of coming up with your actual or average speed. Say you are going 85 in a 65 and you see a cop spin around, slow down to 45. You will most likely have enough time to average your speed back down to the speed limit.

That's good to know OneTrick. I still think that the cop messed something up because I know I was not going 95. He must have been running over-sized tires (35's) which threw his odometer off.......

mine's a 3.0... she's been a good truck considering it's my first vehicle and has gone through all those first time driver experimental deals

I can get to 100 pretty easily in mine. I only tried it once though cuz I don't like to go that fast in my truck. Too dangerous.

It's acceleration that most people are after (including me). The 3.0 could definitely use improvement in that area.

The fastest I've gone is 70mph, anything above that would freak me out.

I've to 110mph once on I-5 going from Phoenix to San Diego. There is a stretch of road there of almost 15 miles with absolutely nothing. No trees, no bushes, no cactuses. Extremely boring drive and no place for cops to hide. So it was the perfect opportunity to see where they put speed governor on 3.4L

I occasionally hit a low 90 but I'm glad I have a vehicle that doesn't beg to be driven over 100;my Eclipse on the other hand felt comfortable at 100 and in 5th gear at WOT it would pull to it's redline at about just over 155 and I did it once going across Nebraska one late night.

2nd Gen 3.slow....

After my few mods it runs 100-102 on level ground. In cold weather (below 55 F) it will hit the cutoff at 106 on level ground - it just takes a while to get there but it's a pretty steady climb till it hits that cutoff (which scares the bejesus out of you that first time...lol)

I try not to ever drive that fast though.....one screw up and you can kiss your ass goodbye and at the very least your truck.

235/75r15, 6ply, S speed rated tires (116mph)

I MUCH prefer to drive at 65 or 70 where I can get 20mpg all day long...

I am not surprised that 3.0 V6 engine can push faster than expected. I had '89 4Runner (1st gen.) with 1" suspension lift for 33x12.5-15 tires a long time ago. I did hit at 105-108 mph before cutoff on U.S. 285 HWY north of Monte Vista, Colorado, and again, at a various highway in AZ, NM, and west Texas. It was scary, but fun to feel a rig flying. Totally awesome!!! Don't tell me that I am crazy.

I have seen a few 2nd Gen. 4Runners and LC 90 (Prado) with TurboDiesel engine cuirsing over 100+ mph on Autobahn in Germany while I was on my vacation in Europe in 2001 & 2002.

My 4.10 geared 33" tired 93 xcab pickup seems to struggle to hold 70 on slight highway uphills... fastest I ever had it was downhill, with a tailwind, 94mph, then I got scared and let off...

4.88s need to go in soon...

The fastest I've ever gone comfortably in my 3.slow was ~95-97...the fastest that I have ever gotten her is ~104-106 and thats when it started to shake, I probably could have gotten it up a little higher but I didn't want to push her too much.

Ive hit 110 in a flat area and that was even with my Load worrior on. Probably could have gotten a little more out of her but didn't really want to. I was lifted already but was riding on rails with my double HD setup and felt as comfortable as 80. I miss my old lift, even got used to feeling the extra bumps.
