who has flushed their own tranny????
What are the do's and dont's . I can not find a place around that has the machine to do the flush I have checked out the amsoil page

If my truck is parked and I am not shifting gears, can I harm my tranny with a low fluid level ?? there is no way I can keep up filling through that little dip stick filler tube.:confused:

I've done it once. From what I've read people turn off the engine several times to fill up the pan, I only stopped once and I've been ok so far.

Had mine done @ the local oil change place. It was $65.99 for a pressure flush and refill. It took about 30 min.,
AND THEY'RE INSURED!
Afterwards, I went and shot a few games of pool with my friends, just to celebrate not stinking like tranny fluid, and no busted knuckles.

I did my own and made up a measuring stick in a 5 gal bucket to keep a reference point as to how much got pumped out versus poured in. Shut down twice to keep up.
Make sure you drop the pan so you can clean the pan and magnets.

Had mine done at the dealer and it cost me $90.00 for a pressure flushed plus they added a tranny conditioner made by B&G.
flushing= to remove all fluids in the tranny, converter, rad reservoir, and valve body.
changing= is just a drain and refill. This my friend is my own humble opinion and I'm pretty sure others will chime in on this one.

I just did mine about 1 week ago. It was very very easy. I flushed the tranny and replaced with about 15-16 quarts of Amsoil. Total cost ran about 111.00. I did not however drop the pan and change the filter. Just the flush.
1. Get a 5 gallon bucket and mark 1 gallon increments with a permanent marker. 1 gallon equals 4 quarts.
2. Unscrew the screw for the transmission pan, Drain the transmission pan. Should be 4 qts.
3. Screw in the pan plug and pour 4 qts or oil through trans dip stick tube.
4. Disconnect trans return hose and point into bucket. (For my 99 it was the drivers sides hose comming from radiator.) Little fluid should come out
5. Start the car and watch the trans fluid start flushing out.
6. This step you can do 2 ways. The first is to flush about 1 gallon out and then stop the car and fill 4 qts through the dip stick tube. Or the second way is to fill while draining. This is a little tricky cause its takes a while to fill through the dip stick tube.
7. Repeat this step until you see new trans fluid start to flush out the hose. You will start to see new fluid at around 15 qts.
8. Stop car and re connect hose. Start car, take a spin for about 5 miles.
9. Park car, run through gears and check trans oil level. top off as needed.

So let me get this straight. New oil is poured in through the dipstick, is that just for automatic transmissions? I have a manual and I don't think I have a dipstick, unless its right on the transmisson. I was just going to drain my fluid and replace it.

3.4V6: 20 qts is more than enough, I used about 13-14 qts for my 2nd gen. I'd say go wth 15-16 qts or so. If you want to be sure go with 20.
runnerboy, I was quoted about $120 at the ONE shop in town that had the machine, and that was if I supplied my own oil. They would have also dropped the pan and cleaned the screen too.
Erich, yes on a lot of auto trannies the dipstick is the fill hole. I'm not sure where the fill hole is for the manual trannies. I think a normal drain and fill is fine for MTs, not sure though.

This process is for auto trannys only.

What I did was drop the pan, change the filter and clean the magnets. After replacing the pan and refilling with ATF I took 16 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF to a kwik lube place and they flushed it for about $40 using my ATF. I would be carefull about running the ATF pump dry. Do lots of stops if you do it yourself. The refill through the dipstick is very slow.
Does anyone know if the return cooler line will suck new fluid in? If it would you could maybe submerge an extension line into a 5 gal bucket of new ATF while pumping out the old. Maybe if you plug the dipstick hole the pump would suck new fluid in through the return cooler line? Someone be the ginne pig and try it.
