I have an 87 4runner that has been sitting for about 2 years. It would not start so I changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, stripped the tank, and added a tank liner. Now it is running, but with lots of white smoke that does not stop after the vehicle has warmed up, it actually gets worse. I have tried engine cleaners, smoke eliminators, and Marvel Mystery oil, but to no avail. From the other posts I have read it seems to be a head gasket. How can I check to see if this is the case? If not, what else could it be?
Another problem. My transmission is loud as all get-out. When in neutral there is an awful rattling noise. When I engage the clutch, the noise goes away. When driving the 4R the noise persists and gets louder, even when the clutch is engaged. The noise only goes away when not moving and the clutch is engaged.

Sounds like a head gasket for sure. Check the compression on each cylinder.

The trans problem might be a shot pilot or release bearing, or possibly the shift fork itself. Another possibility is a loose heat shield. Bang around under there with a rubber mallet and see if you can duplicate the rattle. If not, then it most likely is a trans issue.

I am clueless for the most part. How do I check the compression? I heard something about moisture on the spark plugs being a sign of a bad H.G. Is that a correct test? Thanks!

You will either have to buy a compression tester, or get the compression read. In your case it might be best to have a mobile mechanic come and read it. A sure sign test of moisture in the combustion chamber is white smoke out the tailpipe, and we know what the results of that test are.
