I am a little concerned with a whinning noise my '94 3.0 is making.

The noise seems to be coming from the transmission area and it is most apparent when I am idling or as I am moving at slow speeds. The whinning increases as I accelerate but then disappers behind the engine noise.

I started to observe this this past weekend while out on a trail.

Gears are kicking in fine and usual.

Transfer case is as smooth as before and the lower gears are functioning appropriately.

I am getting good readings at the dipstick, as well.

Basically, I have not noticed or felt anything out of the norm, simply the noise is what I do not seem to recognize.

I was told it was the torque converter I cannot think of a reasoning behind that.

Any thoughts or ideas?

What about timing belt, all the other belts and the stuff connected to the timing belt? Have heart that all of that can make whining noises.

check the power steering fluid. when mine whines, its when its low.

but from what you're describing, it probably different. its an idea though.

Is there a girl in the passenger seat? I notice my wife's whining is louder at idle but also decreases with engine noise.

low fluid would cause a whine, as it gets going faster, the fluid goes everywhere as the pump pumps more. so at low speeds or idle, it may whine with low fluid =)

i know you said it sounds like it's from the transmission, but could it be the fan clutch?

All belts look good and timing belt was just replaced 10K ago.

Yesterday as I was trying to nail the whine, it seemed to be coming from this area.

What does this indicate if indeed it is coming from the fan clutch?

The more I pay attention to the whine, the more annoying it gets.

I actually had the same thing on my '96 taco, started one day for no reason. A friend of mine is a trannie expert and I had him take a look at it and he told me it was the transmission, it was just loud. That was about 60K miles ago, noise is the same, and no problems since.

Try sitting at idle with the windows down and then compress the clutch pedal. Does the whinning go away? If so, I would suspect it is from the trannie. Your clutch won't engage until the pedal is pushed, so you can rule that out pretty quickly.

i thought it might be the fan clutch b/c you said (i think) that the whine goes in pace as you accelerate. the fan clutch bearing is known to go bad after time and, eventually, the belt-driven fan will give up the ghost. perhaps not a bad thing; do a search for electric fan, or taurus fan, or flexalite fan.

Indeed, the whine goes in pace with the acceleration but then disappers behind the engine noise. When I deccalerate, the whine takes a while to come back again.

My truck is going to ge going to the dealer soon for the steering recall so I'll have him check that and fix or replace what needs to be done.

My truck, by the way, is automatic and not standard.
