When replacing Valve Cover gaskets do you need to replace the Upper Intake plenum

My truck just started to seep oil from the valve cover gaskets and the repair shop is saying that they have to replace the upper Intake plenum along with it. Is this right? They are saying they can't just buy the seal for the plenum. I have a 98 Tacoma v6 3.4L 4x4

Thanks for any help.

Its prolly a recomended procedure but i wouldn't do it. Fix what you want. If in the future the plenum is a problem then yes. But i would not bother with it.

The upper plenum needs to be removed, but I don't understand why it needs to be replaced. When I did the valve cover gaskets on my 3.0 I got a new plenum gasket from the dealer. I don't see why they wouldn't have one for the 3.4. I would call a local Toyota dealer and see.

I would, the FSM says to replace it. When I pulled mine to install a supercharger I got new gaskets for it. I don't like reusing the MLS gaskets, too much crap gets between the layers.

I assume you meant replace the gaskets right?

Yes but they are saying the entire Upper Plenum not just the gasket. The upper plenum kit they are quoting is $192. Where do you see that in th FSM?

Oh no... not the whole thing, that's crazy. Sounds like they are trying to pay off a house or something.

This FSM link shows the gasket as a non-reuseable part:

so basically when you change out the valve cover gaskets you only have to replace the plenum gasket. Which is what I thought. There is no other seals around the upper plenum that also need to be replaced are there?

When I did mine, I replaced the throttle body gasket and upper and lower plenum gaskets so three in total.

i just did mine in Jan/Feb, things i bought were:

11213-62020 Gasket, Cylinder ($21.75)
11193-70010 Gasket, Spark Plug ($4.16)
17176-62040 Gasket, Air Purge ($11.44)
12204-62010 Valve Sub-Assy PCV ($8.90)
90979-01192 Plug, Spark ($3.13) X6
19037-62010 Cord Set, Spark Plug ($61.82)

there is an upper and lower intake plenum gasket. i did not take my throttle body off so i didn't need that gasket. the spark plug gaskets were for the spark plug tubes because i had some oil seeping from them as well. and while i had it taken down that far and since i had a plug or two drowning in oil, i did a tune up and bought plugs and wires as well. the only other thing i did when i had the intake plenum pieces off was hit as much of the inside with some carb cleaner and a brush to clean some of the build up out of it.

i would doubt that you would need to replace your intake unless there is something crazy wrong with it. this was a few hour job for me in my garage in 20 degree weather with minimal tools, should be a piece of cake for a shop to tackle and get you back on the road fast and for a fair price.
