When do warning lights come on for coolant temp / oil psi?
I have an '88 pickup with the 22RE and I'm installing some aftermarket gauges in it to better keep an on the engine. Well that is all fine and dandy, but if I don't know what temperature or PSI to watch out for, what good are the gauges, right?
So I need to know normal operating ranges and warning ranges for both the coolant temperature and oil pressure for the 22RE. This way I will know whether to be alarmed or not by what these little gauges are telling me.
Thanks,
Rob

If you have the correct thermostat your engine should run at approx 190*F. Hotter than about 210* should concern you. Above about 220* I would consider overheating and take steps to save the engine. If you have the correct 50/50 mix of anti freeze/water and a good radiator cap, boilover will happen at approx 260*, but if it's overheating it can go from 220 to 250+ in seconds, so never push it. Of course all of this assumes your gauge is accurate.
Oil pressure will vary between idle and running rpm. At idle the minimum for the 22RE is 4.3 psi according to the service manual. As soon as you come off idle it will go up - it should run around 30-35 psi normally.
The low oil pressure light usually comes on very low - obviously below 4.3. Except for no load idle, this is too low for proper lubrication, so the oil light comes on you should stop immediately. Within seconds if possible.
