What Does Your Windshield Have On It?

So I just had my windshield replaced, since it's free in Arizona with full coverage. I get a new one every year or so.

I asked specifically that they use Toyota glass. The damaged windshield had "Toyota United" stamp on it. The new one, much to my dismay, does not.

Anyone have a pic or can check what their windshield is stamped with? Just want to make sure I don't have a different version of an OEM Toyota windshield before I rip these guys a new ass.

I know it sounds trivial, but these bastard glass shops make a ton of profit off these replacements and I don't want to get screwed with a cheap ass windshield that will crack the first time I go off road.

From what I know you can't get OEM Toyota windshields. I could be wrong but i believe the OEM glass is made by PPG. A good way to check to see if a used vehicle has been in any major accidents is to check the window stamps of each window. From the factory, they will have "Toyota" stamped on it but once its replaced I dont think they do. I have never been in any major accidents but thats what the dealer told me when I had a windshield replaced.

Wow. I got effed in the a.

My dad just got home with my truck so I checked it out closely.

Mine says:

FY
M848
XXXX (part number)

Quick Googling shows that this is cheap ass Chinese glass. This shop is getting an ass ripping tomorrow. Hope they like changing my windshield again!

How did you get screwed? You got a new piece of glass for free! Stop complaining!

Yes, you can get new Toyota windshields and moldings. They are very expensive though.

He may have a good point though. If replacing windshield glass is the same as any other collision repair, don't you have the right to request OEM parts? OP, I would take a look at your insurance policy and read over the fine print. Or call your agent.

Edit: Is this an Arizona state law?

Not sure about the az law but my dad has an fj cruiser out there and its had the windshield cracked twice in less than 9 months. (pretty sure its the design of the front window) but they got a new one and it had a sticker on the corner saying "toyota" They requested the oem glass.

Anytime you have a repair done and your insurance company is paying the bill, you are the one actually paying the bill, each month with your premium. Your policy will dictate what you are entitled to in a repair. If your policy stipulates that the repair company can use replacement, used or OEM parts then you can request OEM and be specific. If it doesn't specify, then the insurance company can have what ever the repair shop installs, and thats all they will have to pay for unless of course they do not install it correctly and then you can have them replace it again with an OEM part. I would give your insurance agent a call and discuss with him/her exactly what they will allow under your current policy. If its not to your liking, consider changing your insurance company or the wording in the policy the next time it comes up for renewal. Good luck

So after a mountain of BS with USAA, who have again proven to be a pain in the ass with claims, I finally got them to OK a PPG windshield. Still not as nice as a Toyota United, but Toyota PPG is certainly acceptable.

I only bitch because, as Ritzy pointed out, I'm paying the bill for this. I expect my truck to have the same quality parts installed after a claim as what was on it before the loss.

Just one more case of insurance companies cheaping out and screwing their financiers.

One reason why I wont ever let aftermarket parts get installed after a collision. I only want OEM parts, no junk. If I am paying out the butt for my insurance, i damn well better get the same quality when its repaired.
