What to do? Blown HG and more, 95 V6

I have a 95 4Runner, V6, 140k, with the typical white smoke, bad idle, etc, of a blown HG (10 - 15 miles on it like this). Since, I've had trouble starting plus a new "clanking" noise.

A mechanic confirmed blown HG quoting $2000 + parts but feared lower end damage due to the noise (which is now consistant at startup) and basically called the engine a gonner, recommending a JDM replacement or rebuilt quoting $3000 installation + parts.

I'm leaning towards a JDM replacement, which I figure I can install myself rather than tearing the old engine down to find what may be more expensive stuff to repair.

First, is this rational thinking? Second, I'm a design/build contractor but haven't turned wrenches on a truck since rebuilding a 73 CJ5 back in High School. How hard is the install?

I think my mechanic is not really interested in helping out with this, would also be interested in mechanic recommendations, East Bay, NorCal.

Thanks,
Jim

I assume you checked the Vin # on your truck and have determined that the head gasket can not be replaced under warranty, right? If not, better check b/c you might be in for a nice x-mas gift! If you haven't searched the archives about head gasket recall do so. Good luck.

Most of the service campaigns are ending for the HG....you still need to check with Toyota corporate (just give them the VIN).

I would do the JDM if you can or at least a complete running motor as a swap.
You have no idea what you will encounter as you do the teardown and not worth the headache in my book.

My VIN# is just out of the campaign range, which ended 11/30/04.
