Very unusual high-revving accelerating

ok im actually scared about the answer to this one...because i think its not good and wont be cheap to fix and really could be serious. that being said, heres the problem. when im in 4th or 5th gear, and just coasting, with foot steady on pedal and doing approx 2000 rpm, and then i floor it, the rpm's go WAY up and its like the power isnt going to the wheels....its like theres no resistance. it has only started doing this since i got my rear locker (lock-right) installed a week ago. is this bad? sometimes when i drive my moms volvo stationwagon, i experience similar results, but its a very very weird thing. please please calm my nerves because i dont have ANY money. thanks!

mine has 167k stock and the fulid is stock to im thinking its the fuild any writeups on how to change it ?

It has nothing to do with the fluid. A manual transmission will transfer the power with no fluid, although it won't last very long. It has no torque converter like an auto. Your clutch could be on its last legs.

Yeah, with that supercharger, i bet the clutch is seeing its last days.

It sounds like the clutch is slipping. However it could be one of many problems, I's start simple and work your way up.

Clutches will usually slip initially in 5th then maybe 4th gear. Why? Because you can get the most engine torque there with the least transmission gear reduction. That is time the reflected load of the vehicle's mass is the largest at the clutch. A manual transmission won't slip if it is low on oil (check the level by removing the fill plug on the side of the tranny and stick your finger in). It could be there is an oil leak from the back of the engine onto the clutch or it could be the clutch itself reaching it's wear limit. A high revving engine in high gear has always been a sign of a clutch on it's way out on my rigs.

One thing you might try is next time you get the engine revving, let it do so for a while then pull over and stop and try to smell around for that distinctive hot clutch odor.

i really hope its not the clutch...why? it has approx 5k on it. any other ways to check for the condition of the clutch?

another way to check the clutch while driving is to push in the clutch (in 2nd or 3rd gear) while at steady rpm, it should sound like what you hear now, incease rpm and no power. release clutch and you should feel it grab. all the time keeping a steady throttle. no grab and it sounds like the clutch may need to be looked at again. try adjusting and bleeding b4 disassembling.

ahhhhh!

thanks for all the replies and suggestions. i just dont see how it could be after 5k on it. the dealership replaced the clutch, so maybe they decided theyd put in an old clutch and make me come back and get another one put in...who am i kidding? toyota dealerships are the most friendly helpful people to deal with!

Did they also replace or reface the flywheel with the proper step in it? If not, that may be a cause of the the problem. I have seem Lock-Rites slip, but mainly when worn and on the Jeep Dana 35 version (that is a weaker design than the Toyota version). When they slip, you know it is the locker, makes a heck of a racket. I suppose you could check out the locker operation:

With only 5k on that clutch, go back into the dealer and tell them that the clutch is slipping and that they need to fix it without charging you. That's BS that the clutch is slipping, sounds like the possibly didn't resurface the flywheel or that they just installed the clutch poorly.

By chance, have you been driving hard? Was there any specific time that you really gave the clutch a good roast? That could explain why the clutch is going out if they didn't install it wrong.

i mean there was one time this summer it was smelling bad when i was wheeling and almost got stuck...other than that, not anything unusual. and when that happened this summer, its performance was fine, just bad smell, i dont know why all of a sudden it would act up like this. i havent been off the road but once since that time, and that was just to test out the locker (make sure it engaged), which was a very very easy small light "test" or whatever. i will be going back up to toyota stealership and have them tell me exactly what they did last time and tell me what the condition of it is, for free. stupid people.
