Valve tap on cold start?
Hi,
I have an 01 4runner/v6 with 84K, 5w-30 oil & filter (toyota) has been changed every 3K since new, without fail. I'm starting to hear a valve tap on inital startup when the ambient temp is real low, goes away in a second. You know how it is, you hear it once and then you start listening for it and getting parenoid so you seem to hear it louder and more often...LOL I've searched through a bunch of posts and it does not seem to be an injector or Exhaust manifold.
Are the valves adjustable and since I'll be doing the timing belt before the end of the year is it worth getting them done.
Is this a normal thing? (do alot of you with similar motors have start-up noises). My partner @ work has the same motor in an 03 Taco w/<30K and his sounds much worse than mine when cold (his has a slight knock).
Thanks
Doug

Well, I have 3.0 but I'll chime in anyways. Mne's a 95 4Runner with 160k miles and the head gasket was just replaced. I live in Mass and when it's really cold on the first start up of the day after it's been sitting all night it taps for a couple of seconds. I suppose my valves are a little loose. What I'm trying to say is yours should be fine, if you can adjust the valves yourself go ahead, otherwise it's not neccesary or worth it to pay for it. Cheers
