Value of a '99 4Runner...

"Highlander" edition, known as the Sport Package or Sport Edition in '00-'02. Hood scoop. Automatic (which I do want). 4x4 with e-locker! Good shape cosmetically inside and out. 115,000 miles. This is a vehicle I've been searching for and I found one at a dealer here in Phoenix (85340 zip, if that makes a difference). KBB books it out at $14,250 retail. Dealer is asking about $13,900.

What would you consider a good price based on those facts and that mileage? Let me know if I can provide more details.

Ed

Edmunds has it at private party at 12.5K and retail close to 15K! in a clean shape
I not sure all options are included. The milage could be lower and that is what gives the biggest hit on the value.

Maybe have a local mechanic go it over to see if all checks out. Did it have any maintainance records? Have the timing belt and water pump been changed?

Didn't you just get a 97' 4runner?

That's not too bad. I think it really depends on condition, if it is premo then go for it. If the truck has lots of dings, stains, or other little issues... then offer less. If you could get it around 13k that would be very good.

Define "good shape". Does it have some flaws? Any extras? Good tires?

I paid just under $14k last fall for mine with 94k on the odo and it came with a Yakima Load Warrior rack and new tires plus it has 5% tint all around.

Yeah..try and get it lower...I got my '99 exactly as the same as yours minus e-locker with 90k on it for 13,200, see what they will do for you.

if thats "the one" you want, with all the options, you want, grab it.... it took me years to find mine, and have never regreted it, we have had this 3 years now, i love it more each day, if it was me, id walk in with $13500 and see if they sell it, just depends how bad you want it.

I agree if you want it bad enough then get it but I still think you can get the price closer to the 13k mark. I bought my '97 knowing a really wanted a '99 Highlander (I had to have the scoop) and as soon as one came up I bought it and put my '97 up for sale and took me only a month to sell it. '99-'00 4Runners with the rear locker are quite coveted since it had the nice upgrades and the last two years of the diff lock.

Let me know if you need a second set of eyes Ed. I am getting pretty good at the whole inspection process on these.

I would only pay $13 - $13.5K if it had proof of maintenance records, etc. with it. Now if you are looking to turn it for a profit, that is a different story as most people will overlook the lack of records if the vehicle is clean enough.

Let me know. You know where to find me.

Great responses, guys. Exactly what I needed. I haven't even looked at it yet, so there are still some unknowns. When my '95 'Runner broke down last month I really had to evaluate how much wheeling I do and if it's worth keeping two vehicles -- one for my new daily driver (the '97) and the '95 as my wheeling toy. I still haven't decided, and the '95 is still in the frakin shop.

After I bought the '97, I instantly became enamoured with the 3rd generation 4Runners and decided if the right circumstances presented themselves, I could sell both 4Runners and go with one, newer 4Runner -- if it met some very specific criteria.

I put out the word with a few dealerships about my requirements, and this afternoon I got a phone call about the above mentioned vehicle. If I bought a '99-'00 4Runner with the sport package and a locker, it would keep me very happy on long road trips and give me the ability to do as much off-roading as I'll probably ever want to do.

So -- there's my dileemma. I'm trying to decide if it's going to be worth the hassle of selling both 4Runners and purchasing a different one. Ain't we crazy with our silly lil obsessions?
