I have a 1996 4runner

I just got my aftermarket stereo to replace my stock stereo. I had everything ready, connected the new stereo harness to the wiring harness kit I purchased. I take out the old stereo and get ready to replace it, but the wiring harness I had purchased has two parts (two mini harness, one has the 2 purple and 2 green wires and the other part has everything else). When I remove my stock stereo I realize it only has one connector and of course neither of the mini connectors from the wiring harness kit fit. I'm pretty sure I bought the right connector. I did purchase it off ebay...however, I had initially purchased one from best buy when they were going to install it for me, and it also had two mini connectors, which still wouldn't have worked out. Has anyone else with a 1996 toyota 4runner had this problem??? I don't want to put the stock back in, so hopefully I get a solution soon.

You are just going to have to splice wires. I have had to do this on other cars to. You need to look at the diagram for your car and figure out waht each one is and splice it to the corresponding wires on the harness on your stereo. Just get some butt connectors. Its not that bad. Once you figure out where constant power is and ACC power, with the stereo on you can test by touching the other wires until you find what the right speakers are that they connect too.

Most of the istalls I have done I only use the POwer and ACC power from car harness and wire my own speaker wire anyway to get a thicker gauge, then normal 16-18 gauge stock ones.

So there's no other harness kit I can purchase??...What if I decide to change my stereo again, that would be a pain. I'm willing to wait and get a harness somewhere online rather than directly cut into the toyota ones, if that's my only option.

Probably really stupid question...it is ok to drive/operate the car without the stereo connected, right?? Just having the antenna and harness unconnected.

wait dont go cutting wires just yet ..... did you take the stock amp out ? only way the harness will fit

follow that single plug wire down you should see a small sliver box with a few bolts holding it down remove that and unplug it theres two plugs those are what you use

Ok...I haven't checked yet, but that sounds like it will work...however, as I had PMed you(elton)...I just went out and got a new harness that integrates the amp...If I remove the AMP, is the sound any worse...should I just leave the amp and use the new harness??

Though the new harness, seems a little more confusing. There are only 5 wires( red, yellow, black, blue( power antenna), and blue/white(amp turn on)) on the new harness to be spliced with the new stereo harness. Would I just leave the unmatched wires hanging. And also, there are two blue wires on the new harness, but only one blue on the new stereo's harness

its quiet easy to install just remove the factory amp

Ditch that factory amp.

make sure you hook up the blue wires on the adapter harness to the blue (power antenna) or blue white (amp) remote wires from your aftermarket deck. otherwise your power antenna will not go up and down.

Ay one time the dealership used to sell what was called a "theft kit" for harness replacement as often the wires would be butghered when stereos get stolen.. Check with the dealer it may still be available.

I thought I had the wrong harness too until I looked for & removed the amp. The amp in your aftermarket stereo is probably better then the stock amp, so I would remove it.

The 'theft kit' is useless for him. In effect, he already has it. It is a pigtail to the car side head unit plug--which is exactly what he is looking at right now. I bought one in order to install my original HU in my sons car (poor kid had a cassette!) as I didn't think to keep the original plug when I had it swapped for an Alpine right after I bought my 4Runner in 1999.
