Trouble with shifting into 4wd
Ok I don't know if there's a special way to shift into 4wd, but for some reason I'm not able to do it. My friend told me you had to go into neutral, shift to 4wd, then go in reverse or somethin so the wheels will lock up, then shift into drive.
I tried everything and it doesn't shift. I remember before I kept on trying and it finally shifted, but then it took me a half an hour trying to get OUT of 4wd.
Help please....

Not sure if 2nd gens are like mine. Do you have a shifter down on the floor basically? If you do, what works for me is locking the hubs, of course, then rolling the car whether in neutral or in gear and pulling on the shifter till it goes to 4WD. For higher speeds the manual says to tap the accelerator in gear and then shift it. Maybe check your owner's manual too for tips.

While moving forward slowly you simply pull the transfer case lever straight back into 4 high. That is it. First the transfer case will engage 4 high and when that is complete it will send a signal to the vacuum solenoid to apply vacuum pressure to the ADD shift motor in the front diff. When the slip collar finishes locking the two sides of the front diff together the dash light will come on telling you the process is complete. You should be moving while this is going on.
No comes the hard part. You ready? To take it out of 4 high, you push that lever back to where it was while moving forward. When it is done shifting out of 4 high the light will go out.
4 low is a tad more involved. You have to stop the truck and place the transmission in neutral. While stopped and the tranny in neutral, pull the transfer lever back to 4 high then push it to the right and all the way up. Then put the transmission in gear and roll forward to complete the engagement of the front diff disconnect. When it is done the light will come on and the 4 low light will be on. To take it out stop the truck, trans in neutral and move the transfer lever to the 2 high position. Then put the tranny in gear and roll forward until the light goes out.
This is like one step above starting the engine. You can do it trust me. If you get confused flip the visor down and read the directions. You can also check the owner's manual. It will tell you how to work everything on the truck.
Let us know how you make out.

Re: Trouble with shifting into 4wd
You should be able to shift it into 4wd while driving under 50 mph. If you can't you've got bigger problems. You should check your fluid in your transfer case too. I don' know if low fluid would keep you from being able to shift it, but it's worth a shot.

Ok well I just had my roommate look at the front drive shaft, and when I was in 2wd it wasn't spinning, then when I shifted into 4wd, it started spinning. So thank god the 4wd works, and I think the bulb is just burnt out. Scared the crap out of me.
And yes, I do know how to shift into 4wd.

Just out of curiousity, when did Toyota start to make 4WD like on my 2001 4runner?
All I have to do to engage 4WD is to press a button on the lever. According to manual, I can do that at any speed below 60 mph. I can also drive up to top speed in 4WD. To go back to 2WD I just depress that 4WD button.
