TRD e-locker 04 taco to 96 runner swap
I have an 04 prerunner with the trd package (w/ locker). I would like to take it off of the taco and put it on the 4runner. Is this possible? What all would be involved. Would I be better off looking for a salvage axle from a junk yard for the runner?

TEPUI - there's no link in your post, my friend
spaugh - hmm...you've been busy. First a S/C in the taco, then moving it in the 4Runner? Sorry to hear that, but oh well I'm a Taco guy
I believe that the locking rear will cause some problems with your A-Track system when the computer (which is looking for open diff movement) sees a hanging tire with very similar movement to the other wheel that has traction. You'll also need a new diff for your taco since the hole that you've now created when removing the locker will require more fab work to get done right and you'd be better off just finding a new rear axle from a junkyard.
Enough speculation though. I do know that there is a fair bit of fabbing needed to set the Locker module on the diff including notching to hold the unit in place. Wait till ecchamberlin finds this thread since he seriously considered doing the same thing.
There IS a junkyard off of Auto Drive on the I-5 that has a complete rear axle w/locker that the guy wants to sell for I think $500. Eric and I looked at it but we didn't bother to see what gears it had in it. I'd guess that it had 4.30 gears in it but like I said, we didn't check.

Yes, I am a busy dude. The runner is going to be the camping/trail vehicle and the taco is the DD. Ive decided to spare my auto transmission and move the SC to the runner. The taco engine is ripped apart at the moment. I will get the stock intake put back on in the next few days. The SC is sitting in a box at the moment.
Anyways. The locker swap was just a thought. I had better just look for one at a yard. I have a huge list of "wants" for the runner. In order, the list looks something like this.
new battery
roof rack
rear locker
winch
bumpers + sliders
suspension lift + 315's
SC + URD fuel kit.
decent front seats
new (used) hood (sun damaged paint)
eight ball shifter knobs
tundra brakes.
did i miss anything?
In the next 4-5 years I think I can get most of this done.

Ryan he does not have TRAC in a 96 Runner. It was only in 01/02 3rd gens. And this would not be a problem anyway because the system would just be tricked into thinking there is no slipping with the locker. Lots of people run lockers with TRAC active. As will I soon!
My question back at you is are you talking about swapping the entire rear axle or just thirds. If you mean the whole axle then remember that the Taco is leaves and the Runner is a 4 link spring set up. Lots of brackets to be relocated onto the Taco axle and leaf perches to the Runer axle after cutting off all the brackets.
I think it would be easier to get an axle from a junk yard or do an ARB air locker. Lots of work!

Heck yeah! That is super close. We are in Imperial Beach. You gotta come out wheeling with us! We will start simple/easy and go from there. In fact my wife wants to do a trial run with our 20month old to some place like In-Ko Pah or Carvacre. Not too tuff at all.

We can totally work with you if you're stock. Inkopah and Corral Canyon have some good trails for your truck. TJMAtt lives near you and I did too before I moved down to IB.

do you guys go out in this heat? I usually go out shooting and camping near jacumba. It was hot a month ago, I can't imagine it out there now. Its even worse when you drop down into imperial county.

It is funny how things are done here in Cali. When I was in Michigan we played all summer and wrenched on stuff all winter. Here we Play all winter and wrench in the mid summer while down for the heat.
I do not go to the desert in the summer. Coral Canyon is not too bad though. Elevation helps a lot. Carvacre is also high enough and short enough that it is not a problem. Yes it is hot but not so bad that it is not fun. It helps to start really early in the morning. If you started Carvacre by 0800 you could be done by 1030.
If I had your Runner and wanted to wheel it I would do a set of sliders and a rear locker and you would be good to go. But not needed to go out. It would just be a peace of mind thing IMO.

Weather/heat is not a deciding factor to me when I go wheeling. I don't care if it's 110 degrees and 96% humidity - Just means I'll bring more water and SPF 70 sunblock
However, some other people here do not share my view on this, as there have been no runs scheduled for the desert lately on YT and there probably won't until late August/September when things start to cool down out there.

Id also like to get into welding and making my own sliders etc. That another thing on the want list. With the incredibly rediculous california house payment I have, I have to just take it one step at a time.
