Transmission question
Hi
I just picked up a 1995 Toyota 4x4 X-cab for $600.00. It had a close encounter with a deer that is easily fixed. Some A-Hole tried to steal the radio by smashing the passenger side window, but other than that the truck is very sound. I did notice a problem while driving it home though. It pops out of first gear while you are driving. When I asked the former owner about it he said that Continental Transmission looked it over and made some sort of adjustment. It was fine for a while and then it came back. He went back to Continental and they made another adjustment and it was fine for a while and then it came back. He became frustrated with the whole thing and decided to get rid of the truck. Anybody have any ideas of what may actually be wrong with it? Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions. BTW it has a five speed mated to a 3.0 V-6. I will be happy to supply any more info and I hope to go through the stack of paperwork in the glove box later today.

I dont have a manual tranny..but I've read something about the shift bushing causing problems like this. Cheap part, easy fix. Maybe search for "shift bushing" or something...

Hi
Thanks gapguy! We will give it a try in the next day or so. Anybody with any other ideas throw them in. I have learned a lot from this board and most people know their stuff.

Mine did that too. I replaced the bushing in the shifter and the end cap that fits on the end of the shifter and no more problems.
THere is no "linkage" to adjust, Fingerman. The lever goes right down into the top of the trans.

I ordered the parts today from the stealership. None of the local parts places would even look it up. They all said " thats a dealer only part, I don't even have to look". I found a post on another 4x4 site that even gave the Toyota part numbers. We'll see what happens
Thanks

Well we replaced both bushings today and it still pops out of first gear and first gear only. We are driving the truck around starting in second and we have run it up to about 75mph throught he gears and nothing else pops. Any other suggestions or ideas of things to look at? We have a five speed laying around from a 1987 with a 22re, anyone know if that will fit or is it not wise to mix and match between engines?
Thanks again
Thanks again
