I have a 1990 auto 2wd 4runner. I recently took it to a dealership
to have the rear pinion seals replaced..to make a long story short
when i got it back, i noticed that the transmission would not kick
into drive ....it seemed like it stayed in neutral then would kick in to gear after a few seconds....I called the dealership and that told me to check the trans-fluid and if low add 1 to 2 qts. The fluid did not even touch the stick. 2 qts later still having the same
problem and just added the 3rd qt. My question is, if the transmission was drained during the repair, how many quarts would it take to fill it up? I checked the manual, and did not see anything there.... I also have not seen any marks on the driveway from leaks, etc. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you correcting this dealer problem? They should be fixing this for you. Sounds like a bunch of lazy people around there. Tell them you want it fixed.

There is a certain amount of fluid loss upon draining an Auto trans, but why are you buying the ATF?

I have to drive about 3 hours to the dealership and they will refund the money for the fluid.

Ok, I can understand that. Yes, there is a certain amount of fluid loss associated with trans work. The auto trans holds something like 12 qts. So, you should keep adding it until it reaches the desired level. Just remember to pay attention to the cold and hot marks on the AT dipstick.
